    Happy to oblige. You could not do better than buy Hugh Johnson's . Besides being enormously informative, it is a true joy to read.

    The book has recently been republished in a seventh edition, but not only is the prior edition just as fine, but it can be bought in hard cover from Amazon for a song. That's the one I've linked to, and that's the one I recommend you go for.
