Are temperature guns safe or even wise?

  • In the fall our district school board is saying they will test children's temperature twice a day.
Is infrared aimed at your brain safe?  Is it wise to get children used to strangers pointing a gun shaped object at their head?  Am I paranoid?

  • Is infrared safe?  Yes, completely.  Is it a “gun pointed at the head”?  My opinion?  I’ve never heard of it referred to as a temperature “gun.”  If that’s what you think it is, then request that the school check another body part, like the inner wrist or inner elbow.  Then again, I’d not want a gun pointed at any part of my child’s anatomy.  Is this a public school?  Catholic school?
Although I’m a teacher, if I had any children of my own, they’d be homeschooling, non-negotiable.  When parents ask me, this is what I’ve been saying since 2012.

  • It's perfectly fine.  Anything that burns gives off infrared radiation.  In fact, anything that isn't at absolute zero would give off some.

Prolonged exposure might cause some harm (as would prolonged exposure to ultraviolet), but the few seconds it would take to get a temperature reading would do nothing.

But my understanding of infrared thermometers is that they do not EMIT infrared, but READ the infrared radiation coming off the body, which would vary in intensity depending upon the temperature.

  • Harmless.

And it looks no more like a gun than supermarket scanners, or speed guns, or a number of other everyday items.

Infrared thermometers are meant to pick up the natural infrared wavelengths that your body emits, Sair said. They don’t send infrared light or wavelengths into the body.

“It’s not sending any kind of signal,” he said.

  • Harmless or not, it is an unnecessary intrusion into the personal space, and ironic that the rule is 6 feet distancing. I refuse to have my temperature taken by someone who is not authorised to do it.

The point is to have us socuмb  to loss of our privacy.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • The social distancing was created by a 15 year old.
