  • I heard growing up once that we can not eat all animal meat. Is this true? Can we eat alligator and lion, or are there restrictions on this?

  • Are you referring to government endangered species regulations?

Morally speaking, I think we're allowed to eat anything -- except maybe puffer fish (that poisonous fish that some Japanese eat -- you have a 1 in 3 chance of being fatally poisoned). Eating anything risky like that would have to be a mortal sin against the 5th commandment.

Thanks Matt. I was reflecting upon this, and am glad I asked.

I wouldn't have sea gulls for Thanksgiving, but I've read that all birds are edible.

  • Are you referring to Friday?  Animal meat  is meant to mean warm-blooded animals, ie cows, pigs, etc.  however birds are also included.  If you want gator eat away.

  • The only restriction I ever heard was the rule of abstinence from eating meat on Fridays.

Is this every Friday or just during Lent? (I might have asked this before, sorry if I did.)

Every Friday except for Holy Days of Obligation.  If you don't accept the disciplinary changes, or if you do, and wish to fast anyway.

  • I am not sure if this still applies, but at one point beavers were considered to be fish canonically an could this be eaten on days of abstinece in New France.  I think capybaras in South America were also classified as fish and were eaten throughout Lent.

Can you catch them? Not for the fainthearted I imagine. I've never tried crocodile. It was too expensive. :chef:

Crocodile with mango & basil sauce

300g crocodile meat, cut into thin slices
    30g peanut oil
    20g basil leaves
    20g parsley
    5g garlic, chopped
    20ml white wine vinegar
    200ml olive oil
1 mango, stone removed and peeled
    salt & pepper to taste

Heat peanut oil in a frying pan, saute seasoned crocodile pieces for about three minutes then set aside and keep warm. Blend basil, garlic, parsley, vinegar and olive oil in a food processor until smooth, set aside. Slice mango thinly and arrange on plate. Place crocodile slices in the centre, drizzle basil sauce around the plate and garnish with fresh herbs.

I suspect you could substitute alligator for crocodile.
