There is a substance out there called kratom, but it can be addictive. It's technically in the coffee family, but does act on the same receptors that opioids hit. It has great properties for pain relief, relaxation, and also can help people wake up in the morning by relieving the discomforts involved. It can help people who suffering from anxiety. It's banned in about 3-4 states, and Trump's FDA chief, a big pharma revolving door guy, tried to get it banned as "unsafe and ineffective" ... despite the fact that a pharma company he's tied to got an extract of the active ingredient from kratom patented and approved by the FDA as "safe and effective". Go figure, right?
kratom is used by opioid addicts to prevent withdrawal symptoms and by people with chronic pain where nothing else has helped. It is somewhat addictive on its own, but more like how coffee is addictive than an opioid would be. Unlike opioids, kratom does not impair the faculties or reflexes. People in the Southeast Pacific, where it grows natively, chew on the leaves or make teas out of the leaves, and have used it for centuries to help them get through long days of hard labor.
