  • Hello Everyone,

My doctor was encouraging me to try yoga, meditation, and acupuncture. I was trying to research these from a Catholic perspective to see whether or not they are morally safe; however, the outcomes were mixed. Some said they were bad and others said they were good. I'm so confused :confused1:

Could anyone please tell me whether they are morally sound from a Traditional Catholic perspective? I thank you very much in advance for your help and kindness<3

    God bless,
    MyrrhTree

  • Acupuncture has no "spirituality" attached to it and it does work if you have a well trained acupuncturist.  I have a family member who has benefited tremendously from it.  The woman he goes to has a regular "clinical" office, like a doctor would.

Yoga "can" have spirituality attached to it but when you do it for exercise it is just stretching.  When I bend over to touch my toes all I'm doing is stretching out my back, I don't give a darn if someone in India has come up with some fancy name for it, I'm still just touching my toes!

Meditation - pray the rosary!  Litanies!  The "empty your mind" meditation aficionados are looking for trouble, nature abhors a vacuum and "something" or "someone" will come in to fill that empty space if you give them the chance.

  • If you pray the rosary and meditate on the mysteries that is a very good form of meditation.

  • Thanks everyone!

@Marlelar: You said, "The "empty your mind" meditation aficionados are looking for trouble, nature abhors a vacuum and "something" or "someone" will come in to fill that empty space if you give them the chance."

In other words, we have to use our noodles ^ _ ^ This is sound advice and I shall remember it.

Again everyone, thank you so much and God bless<3

  • I don't do yoga because I'm concerned that it can not ever be completely removed from its pagan roots.  I do Pilates which has similar benefits but was developed as therapy for sick people.

  • Under doctor's orders, I do yoga. However, I have left previous yoga classes because they were too weirdly religious. The only offensive thing this teacher does at the end is day namaste. I just say Agnus Dei

St Theresa of Avila also condemned the "empty your mind" kind of meditation.
