  • Nowadays many diss gluten. Some even say that they've found toxic parts in gluten, but with the bad news on gluten, atheism, secularism and paganism are on the rise.
We know about the malice of some Chinese companies and Monsanto, since thanks to them, the wheat is not the same as in Jesus' age nowadays.
But some diss all of the grains.
In our pursue to liberate ourselves from GMOs and additives and other junk, we've fallen into a trap.
The paleo epidemic have infected this forum, too.
    I have these silly questions:
    - Why did Jesus choose wheat if he knew that it'd cause major problems?
    - Are the scientific results on gluten false?
    - Related to the paleo diet: why did God create us from flesh (meat)?

  • As far as I can find out wheat didn't really start to bother people until recently.  Also in many cultures the grains were soaked before being used.

I don't think gluten intolerance is a "fad", many people do feel better not consuming grains.  Maybe it's GMO problems, maybe some other additive.

Man was made from dust not meat.

Eat what promotes your health, avoid that which does not.

Read the info on the healthy home economist website for more insight on the gluten intolerance issue.

  • Pelly,  you ask very interesting questions.

On the composition of man's body, I think St. Thomas Aquinas might be able to help answer your question in part. Marsha is correct in saying that man is made from dust, but the dust is often referred to as "slime" which contains all four elements. I understand that you may be thinking of the reference to St. John's Gospel chapter 1 , v. 14 wherein he writes " ...And the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us."

Below you can read from St. Thomas' Summa Theologica . If you need help understanding him, you might want to post in the General Discussion or in another subforum where more people might be able to help you with your philosophical questions.

  • The Paleo diet that is so popular now is based on evolution. It doesn't have anything to do with God because the Paleolithic era is a man-made invention so it really can not have any connection to your question as to why God made man from the slime of the earth. Eat the foods that agree with you and watch out for modern "fads".

I realize that I might have given you a lot more than you can comprehend in the links I sent you.

I believe the answer to why God made us out of slime (not flesh) would be answered by St. Thomas in the Summa in I, q.91
"Whether the body of the first man was made of the slime of the earth"
    with this statement:
"But it was fitting that the human body should be made of the four elements, that man might have something in common with the inferior bodies, as being something between spiritual and corporeal substances"

Pelly, please make note that St. Thomas quotes Deuteronomy and writes that "God's works are perfect".

How depressing that something as obvious as this has to be spelled out on this forum! And how long will it be till the statement gets attacked!?!

What's next? Is someone going to start a thread saying that we shouldn't drive on concrete roads because Our Lord traveled only on dirt roads and Roman roads made of stone? I wouldn't put it past about 60 percent of the membership to nod approvingly.

  • An allergy to wheat gluten is an impediment to ordination to the priesthood.
