9 Years of Haircare Advice from a Pro Stylist in 54 Minutes

    • Personally I follow this guys hair routine (shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, hair oil) and my hair looks fantastic. I don't buy the exact products he recommends (well half of them) because they are very expensive but I have seen great results since I started taking care of my hair better. His shampooing and drying technique advice was also useful (I was guilty of shampooing wrong and "machine wash" drying my hair with a towel).

    I don't use his own brand shampoo and conditioner because it's $75 USD for 236ML / 8 FL OZ for a set. His shampoo conditioner set would cost $318 USD for 1 LITRE or $159 separately, while I pay $157.42 USD for BOTH my shampoo and conditioner (1 LITRE) that's half the price. Yeah that's still pricey but it's "professional" shampoo and I have seen a difference in my hair and frankly it lasts me many months so it's worth it for me. Could I find a cheaper "drug store" brand shampoo/conditioner that works? Sure but I don't want to spend time and money testing different products at the expensive of my hair health.

    As for the leave-in conditioner and hair oil he recommends, I have both. I bought them both in August last year for $22 USD (leave-in) and $26 USD (hair oil) respectively (I got a small discount).
    So far I've used about 1/5 of the hair oil and 3/4 of the leave-in, so I those two products have definitely been worth it for me.

    • Are men really supposed to be all that assiduous about nourishing their hair?

    I solved that problem several years ago by shaving down to the bare scalp every so often.  I've been getting free haircut coupons lately from Sport Clips (don't know how long that's going to continue) and there is also a barber college on the other side of town where they cut hair for a nominal fee, but in the absence of that, I just use a set of Wahl clippers.  Saves me a fortune.

    (And, yes, I do leave a generous tip.  I don't have the cojones to ask the barber to work for free.)

    • Too much fuss, life is short. The $35 electric hair clipper has worked for 20 years. My wife or kids buzz my hair on the shortest setting. Cost and time effective.

    Seriously, though, what problem were you having that this guy helped you solve? I'd just use bar soap in my hair, except it leaves my scalp itchy. I use no soap at all if I want it to stay combed down nicely, so no need for added oils or gel.

    I used bar soap for a few years before I began shaving down to the bare scalp.  It's all I needed.

    It depends on how long your hair is, this advice isn't just for men, though it could help someone with daughters.

    Also I thought this thread might be a change of pace compared to all the other threads we've had recently.

    • On Phil Donahue show many decades ago, what was the best cleaning shampoo?  Several were used by hairdressers and the best for cleaning was dish soap, palmolive.  And for cleaning and using small amount of shampoo, baking soda.

    I used to make soaps and sell commercially - not huge but we were in Made in Oregon and about 20 other retailers - and the bar everyone loved was goat milk with beer.  Goat milk was in all of the soaps and it helps many people with dry skin, etc.  My brother was in your boat but switched over to the goat milk beer soap extravaganza and hasn't looked back.  The beer added some extra 'sizzle' plus, I got to drink a couple when I was done cleaning up.  If you haven't already, check out a few goat milk soaps from different folks.  It might work for you without having to buy shampoos, etc.
