...regarding how to strive for perfection, Saint Gregory of Nyssa replied by first quoting this passage from Isaiah: "Look to Abraham and Sarah, who gave birth to you." He then added:

  These words are addressed to souls that have gone astray. Just as, for sailors swept far off course from the harbor, the sight of a fire rising from a height—or a mountain peak glimpsed in the distance—serves as a landmark to help them find the right path again, so too are wayward souls—minds drifting without a pilot across the ocean of life—guided back to the harbor of the divine will by the example of Abraham and Sarah. And since humanity is divided into two sexes, and both are offered the free choice between vice and virtue, the divine Word has set a model for imitation before each: men looking to Abraham and women to Sarah, so that both sexes might, through fitting examples, direct their lives according to virtue...
