I gave this gentleman a link to the Ottaviani intervention. He said he hadn't quite read it, but did reply with this:
In regard to the link; Justin Martyr's description of the mass is very similar to the Ordinary Form of the Latin Rite, and I don't suppose it was any less reverent than the forms of the Latin Rite that followed it. I have been to some very reverent "Novus Ordo" masses....but I have also been to some that are excruciating to sit through (especially in San Bernardino County). This is not the fault of the "Novus Ordo" but of the men who preside over the celebrations. The same can be said of those TLM's where the celebrant rattles off the words like an auctioneer who is late for a funeral. Admittedly, I only skimmed through the link, but I will read it again this weekend and try to consider it's points a little deeper.
Hoping to get some ideas to help brainstorm on this point. I don't even know who Justin Martyr is, but I will look him up.
I know the mass isn't
about reverence, though reverence is essential in showing true Catholic intent, I think, but about a true sacrifice. He admits he hasn't read through it, but how else would
you counter the false premise, which he seems to be going off of, that there are still reverent NO masses.
He seems good willed, and if it is the will of God that I be able to speak to him, however unworthy and unknowlegable I am, then I will try my best. He also said he was a convert to Catholicism. I invited him to coffee, but it would be nice to have Raoul, Phyrros, Hobble, GV, Matt, Matt (caminus) with me
