  • Nice to see his picture on greenhill's avatar. Lord of the World was an excellent novel, perhaps even more so than 1984.

  • Aha! You were the first one!

It was taken in 1912 and if you could see it close up you would notice how tired and ill he looks. He died of exhaustion two years later.

What was he doing that was so exhausting that he died from it?

You can make your avatar larger if you want. When you edit your avatar, underneath your avatar picture on the left, you can make it up to 140 pixels wide and tall.

Msgr Benson was a very eloquent preacher. (In those days, before films, TV, etc, preaching was a much bigger thing) He attracted huge "audiences" and made a lot of converts through his preaching, plus raising a lot of money for Catholic causes. He was a sort of preaching star. Thus he was invited to go on big preaching tours. He preached all over Britain. But the big things were his American preaching tours. These were really huge!  But he wasn´t a strong man physically and was often ill. In 1914, he was severely ill and was just beginning to recover when he was asked to go to America to preach. His doctors advised against it. But he insisted that it was his vocation to save souls through his preaching. So he went on a extremely tough schedule which caused him to collapse. He went back to England and died soon after.

Lord of the World was much better than 1984.

Benson wrote another novel Dawn of All about how things went when the world rejected the apostasy and  became Catholic.

I read it recently and found it interesting.

  • I don´t know them, but I a reading "Come Rack, Come, Rope". There is a very good American biography by Janet Grayson.
I takes a lot of nerve to become a Catholic priest when you are the Archbishop of Canterbury´s son!

Hmm I think that you should make the width a little bit smaller than the height, since the original picture is not a square.

My picture is of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.

  • Thank you, Vladimir!
I think the good monsignor looks perfect now.

I only ever saw the Archbishop as an old man before. He always looks very jolly. A very pleasant face.
