Title: Would you use a guitar?
Post by: Malleus on April 20, 2015, 10:37:59 AM
Were you to sing a religious song by yourself? Would you consider the guitar to accompany any religious song you would compose?

Yes.  I think they're fine for private or semi-private music (think singing by the campfire or in the family room with friends).

The guitar is considered a profane instrument, but that is only with respect to liturgical events (e.g., Mass, Vespers, etc.[/i]).  There is nothing wrong with its use in private or in public otherwise.

Malleus - what type of guitar do you play?  Are you going to finger pick or strum?

I wish I could play the guitar, so I could play the accompanying music while I sing this song:

In my misspent youth, I played the guitar at parish folk Masses!

Maybe I like this because the lyrics are sound, it has good harmony and melody, and it's in Spanish, so it's similar to Latin :)

Those who know Spanish will understand the beauty of the lyrics.

Malleus - well, being that you are in spain, you would have to get a guitar built in the "spanish tradition".  That means that you would get something built like a "torres".  You can get them at a super good price being that you are a local.  But, if you decide against guitars, I recommend a harp.  I have a spare guitar sitting around, and I have been thinking about replacing it with a small harp.

Here is the best guitarist imo playing his "real" torres([/code]a $100-200k guitar) live with full animal gut strings!

I have yet to see the evidence for this. Everyone says Pope St. Pius X condemned it by name yet the docuŠ¼ent commonly referred to for this doesn't mention the guitar.

Why does everyone say this but they never produce an actual Church docuŠ¼ent which specifically mentions the guitar?

I'm not in Spain. Why did you think I was?

Like i said, I don't play any instrument actually.

I only asked if trad people here would play the guitar in this context because this is what Novus Ordos commonly do now and i don't like it, it only makes me think of Protestantism.

Malleus -  I thought I remember you saying you were located in spain(which is a special place for the guitar - it is its birthplace).  Your name stuck with me because you added good insight into a previous guitar thread.  But, I am mistaken.

Either way, here is my advice.  I play a concert build spanish classical guitar.  And, to be honest, the modern instrument as a whole is more profane than it is sacred.  To have success/play well you will have to "properly" spend at least $1500 - $3000 in order to ultimately attain an instrument/the know how that will enable you to play properly(like a professional).  Learning to play is easy, but the instrument is a big part of it(and there are numerous ways to get it wrong).  And, that is a low price estimate.  I have been through approx 10 guitars in my lifetime, and it gets pricey.  I recommend you avoid the instrument.  I recommend a wood flute or a harp instead.  The sacred potential is there.  And, they are not pricey.
