(CNN) — No, this isn't ripped from the headlines of the National Enquirer. According to a hospital in Spain, a woman really did give birth to twins at the age of 64.

According to a news release from Hospital Recoletas Burgos, a hospital in Burgos, Spain, the sextagenarian gave birth via C-section to a boy and a girl, and all three patients are in perfect health.

The woman, who is being identified by her initials, had undergone IVF treatment in the United States before returning to Spain.

Recoletas says this isn't the first time the woman has given birth there. Six years ago, she had her first child at the hospital at the tender, fecund age of 58.

Fertility over 50 is a rare but clearly not impossible feat. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (PDF) show that 600 babies were born to women between 50 and 54 years old in 2012. By comparison, there were only 144 such births in 1997.

Celebrities like Janet Jackson are also increasing the visibility of later-in-life pregnancies. Jackson gave birth to her first child in January at the age of 50.

Still, even though fertility treatments have changed the game for older moms, experts say there are risks, both for the birth and for the difficulties of motherhood that follow.

Dr. Mark Sauer, vice chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, told CNN in January that the harder chapters of late pregnancies often go untold.

"What never gets picked up in these stories ... is there's a lot of women doing this stuff that doesn't work for them. They don't get pregnant, or they miscarry, or God forbid, they have a disabled child, and now they're maybe 50, 55, and they've got to deal with it," Sauer said. "They have to be prepared for that."

  • A natural birth by a woman aged 64 would be amazing.  A 64 yr old using IVF - par for the course.

    Here's the clue.

    Animal husbandry for people ?

Artificial conception is banned by the Church.

Why even "conciliar saint" JPII knew that.

  • My great grandmother gave birth to her last baby at almost age 50   . It was her tenth child and came out being a perfect baby boy. No IVF treatment of course.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

Yeah, that's typically THE upper limit without unnatural help.

mid-40s isn't TOO uncommon, late 40s much more rare, but still possible.  After about 50, it's only if there's unnatural interference.

  • Here's a little Saint, born prematurely, by a 52 year old Mother:

              St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, M.S.C.

St. Frances Cabrini, or, as she is still lovingly called by those whose lives she touched, “Mother,” entered the world on July 15, 1850, in the town of Sant’Angelo in the Lodi region of Lombardy in northern Italy. Her given name was Francesca. Her parents gave her, and all their children, a love of their Catholic Faith and a knowledge of the great missionaries of the Church. After their daily devotions, the nightly readings were always stories of St. Francis Xavier, St. Francis de Sales, and other holy priests and brothers who traveled far and wide spreading the Faith and saving the souls of countless creatures who otherwise would be lost to Heaven. These tales of the missionary saints which she heard nightly fired her imagination; her burning desire from early childhood was to bring the Faith to exotic lands, especially to China.

She came two months early to a fifty-two-year-old mother, and, as her father awaited her birth and prayed that the child would be healthy, a flock of white doves, never seen before in their part of Italy, descended upon him and the older brothers and sisters, heralding the birth of this exceptional soul. “Cecchina,” as she was affectionately called by her family, was a delicate child who could not participate in the rough play of her siblings and friends.

When she was a little girl, she often visited her uncle, Don Luigi Oldini, the village priest of a small town near Sant’Angelo. Near Don Luigi’s church was a swift-flowing river, the Venera. Little Cecchina formed paper boats and filled them with violets that she picked from the river bank, pretending that the flowers were the missionary sisters that she would someday send across the ocean to China. One day, she became so immersed in this “game” that she leaned too far over the bank and fell into the Venera. Fortunately, she was pulled out of the water before the river entered a tunnel. Seeing her little body lying wet and shivering along the bank, a young boy rushed to fetch Uncle Luigi. No one saw who rescued her, not even Cecchina! She and Uncle Luigi concluded that it must have been her guardian angel. Indeed, God had special plans for this little girl!

Francesca’s appointed guardian during her childhood was her older sister, Rosa, whose dream of becoming a religious never came to pass because of her duties at home. One of the sisters, Maddalena, was crippled with polio and needed constant attention, and Francesca herself needed to be educated. Rosa, being a teacher, took Francesca under her tutelage from a young age.

I have seen stories of women of grandmotherly age giving birth as a surrogate to their infertile daughter's IVF-implanted babies.

Especially after abusing her body with IVF. I wonder why she didn't go for twins? :scratchchin:

And who is the father of this dear little baby?

  • 64?!?!  That makes me exhausted just thinking about it.
I've always said God gives babies to the young people for a reason.

I wonder why someone would even try to artificially conceive if they wouldn't be able to take care of their child...

The whole idea of this being an actual thing gives me the creeps...

It is as if people have no respect for God or life...

But, since when was that new, I guess...

  • I've noted a very satanic uptic amongst the supposed "prolife" community singing the praises of IVF. It boggles my mind.

Now it's becoming more and more popular for family's to forego conceiving children of their own so that they can adopt unwanted IV babies that would otherwise die. This one not only boggles my mind but deeply disturbs me in so many ways. What on earth do we do about the IVF problem? It's a moral train wreck.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
    ~James 1:27
