I can tell you that in my past quasi-professional life, among the "in crowd", the movers and shakers --- of which I was never a part, I was just a peon tolerated due to my unique knowledge --- most certainly did have this kind of tutti-fruttiness and Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ (small letter F, dictionary definition of "instinctive sympathy or fellow feeling between people with something in common", not necessarily a member of the GAOTU lodge).  

They are at the top of the heap and they have a huge vested interest in supporting each other, boosting each other, establishing an endless tapestry of IOUs --- the "old boy network", if you will.  There is no chance of penetrating their ranks unless you are somehow perceived as being "one of them", and I never figured out where the entrance door was.  Quite honestly, I'm happy to have all that spucatum tauri behind me.

In such a cabalistic environment, it wouldn't have been a stretch at all for one of its members to express an almost-erotic love for another, especially one who could do them a lot of good.  This doesn't surprise me at all.
