  • I'll save you a trip to your calculator -- 127 hours in a month comes out to over 4 HOURS A DAY!

If that's how much an Average American watches TV, no wonder Americans are ignorant about practically everything!

However, there was a bit of good news yesterday on the advertising front. A new report from ratings giant Nielsen - the first to measure viewing across all "three screens" of TV, Internet and cellphones - found that despite an increase in video consumption via the Web and phones, viewers are still watching more television than ever.

The average American spent 127 hours in front of the tube in May - a new high - up from 121 hours a year ago, according to Nielsen.

  • If they just spend ONE or TWO DAYS reading a few important, eye-opening books -- such as 1984 or Brave New World -- just think about what would happen!

People could be learning useful skills, staying in shape, growing spiritually with good books, etc. but instead they watch the tripe that comes across the airwaves.

  • It is precisely because of the tough times that extra-occupational time is given to television.  When life is going badly, people want to be distracted from that reality.

  • True, but it's still difficult to believe that anybody can actually be engaged/entertained by what they have on TV these days. TV was trite junk years ago when I quit watching it. I can't imagine how it must be by now.

There are a few good shows, though (such as on TruTv, Discovery, and Home&Garden Network channels). I tend to watch Man vs. Wild, Forensic Files, The Dog Whisperer,  Verminators, and House Hunters).  Some older TV series on DVD that can be watched and which I also like are Columbo, Little House on the Prairie, Rockford Files, and Chuck Norris' series Walker Texas Ranger. Having no TV is the best policy, however. But if you do decide to keep the TV, the more proper thing would be only an hour a day for these shows,- since time would be better spent doing things more productive for your soul.

  • The rot that many of us grew up watching was pandering to our fallen inclinations, and many of us watched hours and hours of it.  By God's grace, we were able to break that habit.  Now that television panders even more obviously to our carnal inclinations, it should be no surprise that those who do not have the light we have been given are watching it even more than we did.  I believe that if I had not been helped by grace to see what I saw, and to do what I did, I would presently be FAR WORSE than many of my modern contemporaries.  I am not so sure that I am not worse, especially considering the graces I have been given.  God speed to all.
