Facebook "defriending" led to double murder, police say

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) - A Tennessee couple who "defriended" a woman on Facebook were murdered in their home by the jilted woman's father and another man, police said on Thursday.

"It's the worst thing I've ever seen," Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece said, adding he had never seen anything like it in his 27 years in law enforcement in the area. "We've had murders, but nothing like this. This is just senseless."

He said Billy Clay Payne, Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth were killed last month after they deleted Jenelle Potter, the daughter of one of the suspects, from their "friends" list. Both were shot in the head and the man had his throat cut.

The couple's 8-month-old baby was in the mother's arms, unharmed, when the bodies were found.

Marvin Enoch "Buddy" Potter Jr., 60, and Jamie Lynn Curd, 38, were each charged on Wednesday in Mountain City in northeastern Tennessee with two counts of first-degree murder. The men were arrested on Tuesday.

The case was not the first involving violence linked to Facebook. Last year in Iowa, a woman was arrested on accusations of setting fire to a friend's garage after she was defriended on the social network site, local media reported.

In Texas, a man was accused of hitting his wife after she failed to "like" a Facebook post he wrote about the anniversary of his mother's death, according to media reports.

In the Tennessee case, Reece said a couple of harassment cases had been filed against Jenelle Potter in court over "someone blocking her or taking her off."

"Once you've crossed her, you've crossed her father too," Reece said, adding that Jenelle Potter, in her late 20s or early 30s, stays home with her parents and was constantly on Facebook.

Her father, "Buddy" Potter, will return to court next week for a bond hearing after he hires an attorney. Curd, also a second cousin of one of the victims, was appointed an attorney and bond was set at $750,000 for each murder count. His preliminary hearing will be in March.

No charges have been filed against Jenelle Potter, the sheriff said. She could not reached for comment.

Curd's attorney, R.O. Smith, an assistant public defender, said it was "safe to say there's more to it than the Facebook problem, it appears."

"I wish I could provide more of what went on, but there's needless to say a lot of rumors swirling around and nothing substantiated on the rumors," Smith said.

  • Do not bother to contact me on a facebook account, I do not have one, nor intend to.
Nothing on facebook is private, and all your info is very easily assessed by google.

  • This only proves the point I've been making. Facebook is nothing but another invention of the modern world. It's just a tool from satan to get your mind off God.

Most of your "friends" on there aren't really your friends, that woman certainly wasn't a true friend. It's disgusting that these two innocent people were murdered; they probably "unfriended" the girl because they thought she was mentally ill or something. She must have been to get her father and some other man to kill those people. Now that baby has to go the rest of its life without its parents. It's sickening. This world needs a chastisement so bad.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • I don't trust facebook much. Most of the people I have on mine are people I don't know all that well. I would be worried that facebook could be used to get dirt on you....you might have people on your friends list that don't like you who want to try to ruin your reputation or something. I have also heard of business and employers doing investigations on people through facebook.

  • That's like saying you're not going to get married while citing proof of women committing adultery.  Except that someone being shot for such a reason as being de-friended on Facebook is much more rare.  Facebook, CathInfo, any online bulletin board, same difference.

  • Well, not exactly.  No one here knows who I am or where I live, for example.

  • I have a Facebook account, but I only have 13 friends on it because I only allow relatives or friends I have befriended in real life to be added to my list. I don't accept people who ask to be my friend but whom I don't know personally.

  • Facebook is generally bad because it compels you to give away your personal information - even without any action on your own part, by friends betraying information about you to Facebook by mentioning it. We have sleep-walked into a police state - the final stage of which is neighbour surveillance and universal snitching.

But, metaphorically speaking, if you want to maintain your privacy, don't run to the desert or forest - be hidden in plain sight. Have your contacts and benign social life online, permit the things that you would expect anyone in the general public to be able to find out, but never use untrusted routes like Facebook to communicate sensitive issues or to contact friends who you care about.

The need for a paranoid mindset has well and truly come.

You can, but to what end?  Wouldn't that make communicating with people you know difficult?

  • I don't have a Facebook account nor do I join anyone's Facebook. It's a waste of time, just like most of what goes on in all forums and blogs (including this one). Besides, if the ladies saw what I really look like, I'd be inundated with proposals.

  • Beware. Facebook, Google, Twitter, Apple's various on-line services all feed directly into US government data-trawlers. Nothing gets forgotten, contrary to popular belief. Your "deleted" history is merely made inaccessible to you personally. Facebook is especially bad becoause you cannot even choose whom to reveal as 'friends'. Facebook guesses pretty quickly (or the others who are naive give you away instantly) and you have no real say in it. This is the work of spooks. In addition, your mobile phone tracks you.

Why is this important? Well, ask yourself: Whose business is it to know where you go to mass on Sunday, or other days? Whose business is it to know you walked into a church at the time when confessions are being heard? Whose business is it to know which Catholic friends you have outside of work, or outside of the public domain?

The modern world means that our lives are docuмented in astounding detail by people we have never met, and probably would never want to meet. If you value your privacy and the safety of your family in the coming tyranny, you will think very carefully between what you consider to be public knowledge and your private life. Do not own an advanced smart-phone (which is never really "off" but only "asleep" to your eyes), and whatever phone you have, do not take it with you except on public business (or have it switched off properly). Do not own a facebook account, or a google/yahoo/whatever account, except through anonymous means.

And ideally, do not browse the web using a regular browser - use some kind of protection such as Tor.

  • All a person needs is your cell phone number and they can tap your phone via the number and listen in to all your phone conversations and see all your text messages. There's a way of doing that.
