  • At least among trads and most definitely amongst novus ordos these days.

I have yet to understand the fact that things like the Lord of the Rings books get a pass among traditionalists, even though these books portray magic and sorcery as "good things" when such things have always been condemned.

It makes no sense to say: "oh hosh posh, it's just a story and fiction!" If that's the case, then why not accept Harry Potter? Novus Ordos do, but I know trads don't.

To me it seems just like portraying any other sin as good. Sorcery, magic, witchcraft and all that nonsense are still sins and always will be, so why do they get a pass in stories? Any other sin doesn't.

  • The reason it may get  pass is because it is a work of fiction. As long as we remember that this is make believe and it is a work of fiction then it may get a pass.

The basic argument is good guys in LoTR have abilities, yes, but they're not presented as witchcraft.

  • I know I'm gonna get slammed for this, and I'm not opposed to being wrong, but I don't really see the issue with Harry Potter, at least for an adult who is sound in his faith and isn't tempted to *actual* sorcery by works of fiction.

I grant that LOTR Is set up in a more "Catholic friendly" way and thus perhaps more edifying, but as far as I understand, HP also is set up with a dynamic that you're either born with magical ability or you aren't, so I don't see a parallel between that and any "real life" sorcery which would of course involve the demonic.

Unless I'm missing something with HP, I think its fine, with the understanding that, as with anything, it needs to be take in moderation, and a strong distinction between fiction and reality needs to be maintained, along with a strong emphasis on making sure people know their faith (which I do indeed think is missing in the NO)
