  • So I recently got [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003C268XG/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003C268XG&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwchanco-20 bible. I was waiting to get the Haydock, and now I've just realized that its quite big, and I'm not sure where to keep it. My mantle is a bit short unfortunately, maybe 10 inches wide. Add to that I have a pitched roof, and the roof comes down about 12"-14" above it.

Any ideas on where to keep it? I would like to display it- I don't think that's wrong, is it?

  • dining room table perhaps? I'd have it lying down on some decorative surface, like a table that you push against a wall that has statues on it.

In regards to being a responsible man, would it be interesting to learn, after six years of accuмulating all the wisdom you could, that you had it right all alon

  • I have my Haydock on a bookshelf in a room in my home that I use for prayer and serious religious study.  It is a chapel of sorts, and I am very lucky to have such a place in my home.  I have a beautiful NAB (unfortunate translation, but it became our family Bible before I knew ho bad the translation is) on a coffee table in the family room.  I have one other translation and several commentaries in my library, and the DRV on my Kindle.  You can get it legally and free for the Kindle at the Guttenberg Project website.

  • I keep my Bible atop a "home shrine", I suppose you'd call it. I've heard the term "home altar", too.  A small area in my home with a cross and some candles, and a few statues. The Bible rests in the center of it all, on the table top. On the shelves below I keep a few extra candles, a small bottle of Holy Water...that sort of thing.  I read Compline in that space every night.

  • In my old house, we had an old gigantic red Bible called the Douay-Confraternity Bible: Papal Edition.  It featured Pope Pius XII and the Cardinals of North America during his pontificate.  It was kept on top of our old piano =)

Very nice Retablo. There's actually a thread on this forum where members have shared a picture of their little shrine. If you'd like me to find it, let me know!

  • @s2srea:

I'm always intrigued by what other Catholics do as far as creating sacred spaces in their homes. If you could find that thread without much difficulty, sure.  Thank you for offering.

Presently my space is sort of in flux. I have a plan in mind, though, to give it some unity of theme (which it lacks, at present). I think I've finally settled on the theme, however: an evocation of the atmosphere of a California mission chapel. I've managed to acquire a few suitable statues from a Spanish importer, a crucifix in the same style, and a variety of devotional candles.  I've even gotten myself a CD of quiet Spanish classical guitar music to give sound to the atmosphere. Now I just have to arrange everything in a way that visually mimicks the prototype, thus creating the right "mood", if you will. It's an enjoyable project.

The Bible (RSV-Ignatius Press) fits in well with its soft, burgundy leather cover and gold-leafed pages. On the cover is an Icon of Christ Pantocrator, in gold, surrounded by symbols of the four Evangelists...which is good, since in order to stay faithful to the theme my icons will have to go. I'll still have that one, at least.
