  • Ordinarily, the conclave cannot begin until a period of time to allow the cardinals to gather.  Benedict 16 signed legislation that authorizes the conclave to begin earlier since the actual date of the Conciliar sede vacante is known.  Therefore, the conclave could begin as soon as 28 February 2013 at 8:01 pm, Rome time.  It will begin when the cardinals decide they are ready.  My guess is that they will begin sometime during the following week.  The first vote is taken on day two of the conclave.  I have no idea how long it will actually take for the conclave to make their selection.  The only thing that is pretty much certain is that the cardinals will do everything they can to keep the Holy Ghost out of their decision making process.

But, prior to this new legislation, I believe they would have had to wait for three weeks before they could have begun the conclave so their selection could not have been known before the last week or so of March.  But this is no longer the case as of yesterday, according to the news report I read.

  • The rules used to say that the Cardinals had to wait at least 15 days after the death of the Pope to begin the new Conclave.  Then they voted 2 times a day--in the morning and in the evening--until a majority was reached.

However, since this Pope did not die and everyone knew when he would be abandoning the Chair of St. Peter, the question arose if they had to wait the traditional 2 weeks or not.  B16 decided no and declared that, under these circuмstances, they cardinals could vote for themselves when they wanted to begin the conclave.

It is widely speculated that they will begin about the 9th or 10th of March.

Since the rules are changed this time, and the cardinals are given even
MORE power than they had before, and the situation is such that anyone
they choose is going to be put up for practical victimhood, it seems likely
that nobody is going to want to be elected, and so they might not come to
any decision for a long time -- maybe a VERY long time.

Alternatively, they will elect someone they want to 'get rid of,' someone
they figure will 'take the heat' of the current problems, and will be burdened
with all the problems - a traditionalist, that is.

  • I think they know already whom they will elect to succeed BXVI, particularly given the advanced notice of his departure.  Just my opinion!

There won't be a true traditionalist coming out of this conclave unless for some reason the Holy Ghost takes complete control.  They know that a true unabashed Roman Catholic would change all of their bu####!+ practically overnight.  It would be their worst nightmare--the NO would be summarily abolished and fαɢɢօts would be promptly "laicized."

  • In one of his new sermons, Fr. Chazal says the next pope is likely to be
far more liberal than B16 was.  He says the cardinals have been very
challenged by his conservatism.  All the appointments B16 made were
very liberal, like Di Noia and Mueller.  The curia is the body who expresses
the mind of the Pope, and all of B16's curia have been full-bore
    progressives.

But the curia is required to tender their resignations when the pope leaves
office, and they are not allowed to conduct any business after the pope
who had them in office leaves his own office.
