I really don't think this kind of neurosis was common two hundred years ago. I think it has to do with our unreal way of life, spiritual emptiness, etc.

When we bought our house 5 years ago, one of the things we liked about it was the back deck. It goes most of the length of the house and we sit at the top of a hill. We can look down at the school yard a block away and see much of the neighborhood. What we didn't realize was that we had two anal-retentive neighbors who mowed their lawns all of the time. I have seen them mow when it is raining and when it is too dark to see what you have mowed. The wife of one neighbor will get out with the small mower and mow in the daytime and when her husband gets home, he will get out the riding lawn mower and mow the same thing. When mama can't mow during the day, the daughter will come over and mow. We have decided they get some sort of sɛҳuąƖ thrill out of it. They are going to have some severe withdrawals problems when gas gets scarce.
