Title: What is your rosary routine?

I've posted this elsewhere, but am hoping to get input here:

What is your rosary routine? If you have a family, how and when do you say your rosary together?

Do you say a rosary while driving? While getting ready? Kneeling in front of our Blessed Mother? In a Church? How does your routine help you ensure its said every day?

Our Rosary routine is pretty simple.  We gather as a family at 8 pm in our living room.  Our children have made a simple home altar for Our Blessed Mother which is in that room.  

Since it is a family affair, everyone has a "job."  Our youngest daughter is 18 months old.  Since she can't really say her prayers, she passes out the rosaries.  Believe it or not, she knows whose rosary is whose.  

Everybody has a different night to lead and it works pretty well.  Sometimes it is chaos, but I think Our Mother understands!

After the rosary, we put the children to bed.  It's pretty simple and it helps them relax and end their day.  They also know that once our prayers are done, it's off to bed.

I have also started walking for an hour in the mornings, so I pray a Rosary while I am walking.  

On Sundays, we pray our Rosary before Mass at our church.  If we miss it, we pray in the van on the way home.

Any time is a good time for the Rosary, if you ask me...

Being single, I almost envy CathMomof7 for the regularity that her situation promotes. My practices are far more erratic. Some days I'll say all three Mysteries, then go for days without saying any. I just got this, which may be good:

Years ago, I was having trouble keeping my mind on the mysteries during my Rosary. I went around asking for advice and ideas how to deal with it. Eventually I found a booklet put out by Liguori called "Let's Pray (not just say) the Rosary," which has one short meditation for each of the 150 Hail Marys. I found this a lot more helpful than the "Scriptural Rosary" meditations. The author's name is Richard Rooney, S.J.

They let the old stock deplete and did not reprint it for a few years, and came out with a new version. The new version did not work for me. I would not recommend that.

Apparently they have re-issued the classic version, which was out of print for some years. The new issue has the Luminous Mysteries added. I have not seen an actual copy so I can't vouch for it.

Another help is to make the intention of asking for the grace to pray the Rosary well.

A very pious practice is to include in your intentions the prayer for the grace of Love of God, and the grace of Final Perseverance. These are two things that we must practice our entire lives if we want to receive them, because they are elusive. The devil's primary attack is to deprive souls of love of God. We cannot merit the grace of final perseverance, but if we persevere in asking for it, how can it be denied?

The Memory Rosary is not intended for helping people to delay finishing 5 decade Rosaries for more than one day. You still need to keep your decades together, and should finish 5 decades within a one-day window. If you want to go for a second Rosary, you ought to strive to finish it the same day. Same for 3 Rosaries: get it done within one day, if at all possible.

There are a few principles to keep in mind for Rosary indulgences.

If you'd like to get an indulgence, you should remember that one decade has no indulgence. Nor is there an indulgence for 2, 3, or 4 decades. You have to pray a 5-decade Rosary (one-third of a complete Rosary) to get the first indulgence. If you are experiencing any interruptions, you should try to get back and finish the decade you were on, at the very least, within a short time, depending on your situation. I think that means as soon as practically possible, or, at the first opportunity. But in any event, you should finish the 5 decades in one day, if at all possible.

When I have neglected to finish one decade for an hour or more, I like to start the decade over, just to be sure.

Overall, indulgences apply to one who is in the state of grace. This is reflected in the words, "under the usual conditions," found in the indulgence description after some prayers. If you need to get to confession to be in the state of grace, you can still benefit from praying a Rosary, but you will not receive the indulgence until you make a good confession.

I pray the Rosary in my bed right before I go to sleep ( even if it is at 3 or 4 am). I don't kneel because I have bad knees and a bad back.

My Wife and I pray the Rosary together every day. We have a Home Altar I made out of an old Console TV with Contact paper and paint with a picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and two kneelers ( one I built)  the Habit of Prayer simply requires establishing a routine.

We say a Morning offering - We say the Angelus (Although this time of year its the Regina Coeli) at Dawn (8) Noon and Evening(6) We say the Holy Rosary at 6:15 pm and the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary immediately afterward.   We say Night prayers (Examen) before retiring.

From time to time we add devotions depending upon the time of year (Like this month is the Month of May with the Crowning of the Blessed Virgin with Flowers) or like in June the Month of the Sacred Heart - or November prayers for the Dead or Advent or Lent etc.

That is our normal routine - we have prayed while driving or before or after Mass when our schedule dictates it and there are times if crosses are heavy to pray Full Rosaries or to visit the Blessed Sacrament and offer Holy Hours which include the Holy Rosary.

Does this mean everyone has to do as we do - of course not - I know a Lady who prays 5 Full Rosaries or more a day , she prays circles around us . Because she is elderly with a lot of time on her hands and she is praying for her Children.  I only recommend that if they can every Catholic should develope the habit of Offering at Least 5 Decades in keeping with Our Blessed Mothers request and if you want to know why its a good idea - look up the 15 Promises She made for all those who are devoted to the Holy Rosary - to me its a no brainer for something that takes so little time for the benefits derived from it.  I can tell you this - if you really apply yourself to the Holy Rosary for 6 Months straight - never miss a day - Prepare before you pray and be in the right frame of mind so that you can really concentrate on meditating on the Mysteries without distractions - that in 6 Months you will notice an increase in Catholic Devotion in your life.  Prayer shouldnt be an obligation. It will become instead enjoyable because in prayer we are uplifted and conversing with Almighty GOD. When that realization hits you - its not something I can describe , its something you need to experience for yourself.

Then when you say you "believe" it carries a whole deeper meaning for you. I also know people who seldom if ever pray the Holy Rosary.  It doesnt make them a bad person.  You shouldnt feel guilty if you dont pray the Holy Rosary , but rather - if you dont or only do seldomly - then you are simply missing out. You really are.  You are missing out on a very great and wonderful devotion that has been known to produce miracles , make Saints , and defeat Heresies and push back the enemies of GOD.   So I hope this helps - Families that learn to Pray not out of Obligation but rather out of a Love of Almighty GOD - The Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints will derive countless blessings from this wonderful Catholic Devotion.

1. 90% of the time I pray at least 5 decades daily. If I only pray 5 decades it is almost always in the evening right before going to sleep. If I pray 15 decades, it's 5 in the morning, 5 in the afternoon, 5 before bed. Sometimes I'll pray the Rosary while sitting in the passenger seat, or while in a bus. Lately, if I delay praying until its very late, I'll fall asleep praying the Rosary. It's happened a few times. I'm usually sitting up while I pray, if I'm in church I will kneel. I kneel at home as well but usually need something to lean my upper body against. Whenever I get a chance to go to Mass, I will try to pray 5 decades inside the church before the Mass begins - if I don't finish, I just keep on praying through the Mass (I used to pray during Mass, but of late I prefer to follow along in a prayer book that has different prayers to say at the different parts of the Mass, not like a Daily Missal). I have several statues and images of the Blessed Virgin but often times I just prefer to close my eyes and sit in a dark and cool room instead. If I feel like later on I won't get a Rosary in, I usually just pray it wherever I am. I used to pray the Rosary a lot while walking, but I've found it to be distracting (from the Rosary that is).

2. If and when I pray with my family, how we do it depends on who I'm with and how much time we have. When my grandmother was still living (RIP), I would begin by praying the "Come Holy Ghost", Act of Contrition, and occasionally a few other prayers. Then I would read a chapter from a spiritual book for her. We would proceed to pray 5 decades, after which we added a Memorare, a De Profundis and other prayers. Sometimes I would read another chapter from the book afterwards. When I pray with my brothers, I'll get them involved in several ways. First of all, before the Rosary we go over the Catechism. Then we will pray the Rosary - after each decade someone else leads the next decade, that way everyone feels like they participate and there's some relief from the monotony of saying one part every time over and over again. Then at the end, we'll read a section from the Lives of the Saints or some other appropriate reading. For the young ones, I'll give them a book that lists all the Mysteries and has corresponding pictures for them to look at while we pray. If someone is short on time, we'll pray one decade together and whoever can stay stays, whoever needs to go makes the sign of the cross and leaves quietly. When I've visited other friends and family to pray, we often start by singing a verse from an appropriate hymn for the occasion. Throughout the Rosary we pause at the end of each decade and sing another verse. At the very end, we'll sing a verse or two from that hymn or from another one if that is finished. That way it takes away the monotony.

I pray the rosary using a app on my android phone that has a prerecorded voice saying the rosary. If I'm out and about on the train or bus I put my earbud headphones on and pray along silently to that days mystery .

Does anyone else find it helpful to pray the rosary using an app on their smartphone? Both Apple and Android both have some really nice ones.

My husband and I say the rosary in the morning after breakfast the days that he is off work.  When he is working we say it before he goes to work about 6pm.  I say extra rosaries when I walk, take the dog for a walk, driving, whenever I can and my goal is 3 rosaries if possible of the 15 mysteries.  I find saying 3 a day very important for myself.  In the home, we have a blessed candle that we light when we say rosary for those who have died before us.  When we say rosary before Mass, I feel it best for me, to follow the mysteries with pictures of those mysteries so as to lessen distractions. I do not say rosaries in front of abortion clinics, BUT I would in front of the dioceses, because I know they deliver.  Also I noticed that the flyers used to say rosary in front of clinics have the "meditations"of the rosary to meditations of abortion and such.  I don't think this is right.  I see it as being ecuмenicalized. If you are going to say a rosary, say it as Our Lady intended it to be said, you meditate on the mysteries.  It is almost like the changes of the stations of the cross, you meditate on Christ's Passion and not of the cares of the world.  I Thank you for this post.

My family prays the Holy Rosary usually at evenings, except Sundays when we pray the Holy Rosary along with the other faithful in the pews before the oblation of the hallowed Mysteries of the Sacred Altar.

At home we follow the Dominican method of recitation, since the faithful of the Spanish dominions were little accustomed to recite the Apostolic Symbol and the preliminary Pater and the threefold Ave before the Holy Mysteries. Some Catholics of Hispanic descent say the threefold Ave after the Mysteries but before the Salve Regina. The Litanies of the Blessed Virgin Mary are recited in Latin, as has been the custom in our family since our grandparents could remember.

Other then Sat, Sunday or certain Holy Days-or if Rosary led by someone else-I say 5 days a week the Sorrowful only.......
and the "someone" is usually in CHurch, where no one-priest nor lay-say Luminous at all....

My husband and I say rosary every day.  When he works, we say a rosary at 6pm and when he is off, in the mornings.  We say it in the car on our journeys and I say one when I take a daily walk. For myself, I try to say 3 rosaries. But always everyday.  I keep a rosary in my pocket.  Last week, I gave 2 rosaries to a friend and family member.  But I started reading a book: the secret of the rosary by De Monfort.  If you have never read it, it is very good! It is a small paperback and Tan publishes it.

I don't think it's blasphemous; I just think it depends on if it helps someone or someone else just doesn't care for it.

I prefer my Rosary, because I (it was my Mom's RIP) had it Blessed for me to gain other indulgences when I use it in a state of grace, of course, also within 8 days of sacraments.


Oh - my daughter had one of those black and shocking pink tiger-striped jungle car sets with matching steering wheel when she was 18.  :barf:

I just don't know about relying on it as a blessed sacramental.  :idea: (I think not!)  :judge:

I think they are pretty too, but I wasn't sure if something like that was okay. Not that I can afford one anyway.

LOL about the wild car accessories.  I am way too particular about my car looking completely tidy inside so I have never had anything like that.  I did however, drive around in high school with a lot of glass chalk on my back window. I wonder  if that is just a Midwest thing.

I expect they are well intentioned, but they seem kind of silly to me.  I am also not sure that would qualify as using beads for the indulgence.

As my family was growing up, we said the rosary every day after supper.  We were fortunate enough to have a room in our house that we used as a chapel of sorts.  We also often said the rosary on car trips if they were long enough to get in five decades.  

When my children were all out of the house, my wife and I continued to pray the rosary together every evening, sometimes joined by family members who happened to be there or friends.  For about a year after my wife died, it was almost impossible for me to say the rosary at all, and I began saying the Jesus Prayer with a Byzantine prayer rope.  I was eventually able to resume saying the rosary, but generally did it before Mass or the Divine Liturgy.  Now that I am living with one of by daughters and her family again while I am waiting for a house to be finished, I say the rosary with them, although it does not always happen daily.  We also have the rosary after Matins and the Divine Liturgy at church every morning.

I try to pray 20 decades a day. Sometimes there is more.
