  • I am thinking of buying an e-book reader like a kindle but I am unsure of which one to buy. Does anyone else have one and what do you suggest?
I would like to buy one that has access to as many Catholic books on all topics as possible.

  • I like my Kindle a lot.

  • Thanks for the tips.
Does Amazon have a pretty good selection of Traditional Catholic ebooks? I am pretty new to this so I'm not sure. I want to get an ebook reader that has as many of these books available.

  • Zenith- you can essentially get any e-book reader or tablet today, and it will work for you. It really depends on budget, and if you want additional features like being able to connect wirelessly, have access to the internet, etc.

I have a tablet by Samsung, and you can download apps for the different e-book publishers or download a e-book reader that will read .pdf's as well. Its really useful. Its nice because you can connect to the internet wirelessly, and go to a website like archive.org, and download a TON of free Catholic classics. A friend shared a timeless work by a very popular and holy cardinal; it was a pdf formatted docuмent, which was made by a seminarian by taking a photograph of a 5 volume work. Many many pages, and its extremely rare. These are things you might not have access to otherwise; but I could be wrong.

So my 2¢: Kindles are nice, but I don't know if they give you access to this plethora of hard to find, out of print, impramatured, classic Catholic books and information.

The Kindle seems to have a lot of the classic books, like Immitation of Christ, Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence, Ascent of Mt. Carmel, etc. It doesn't seem to have any books from the SSPX, however.

  • A piece of software called Calibre is free on the web.  It will convert a lot of the formats to each other, so you are not limited to one source.  Doesn't do a very good job on PDFs of the scanned type that were mentioned above, so not always a readable format when used with an e-reader, but Calibre itself has a built in reader that will work just fine on a desktop or laptop.

It can also be used to search the web for ebooks so you can find about anything that way.  I'm sure that there are similar software apps that can be found on the web.

But you could read these PDFs too on a kindle.

Get the kindle, a regular tablet is not ideal for reading, there is glare on a tablet and the battery life can be distracting.

If you just want to read, the ereader is much easier on the eyes than a tablet screen.

Kindle supports more than what is on Amazon for sale, many pdfs etc can be put on it. Whatever is out there, for free, in txt, pdf, etc you can put on the kindle.

The electronic ink is energy efficient and glarefree.

Thanks. I do plan on getting one with electronic ink because less strain on eyes.

I'm thinking of the kindle but still will shop around to get a better idea of whats out there.

What is the most common ebook file? Is it Pdf, EPUB, etc?
