I was in it all through my childhood until graduating high school.

It's a program where kids sign up for different projects, and are then judged on them. Everyone recieves a color of ribbon based upon their performance or product. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion usually get trophies and a rosette.

You can show farm animals, dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, etc.

You can also sign up for arts and crafts, sewing, photography, baking, horticulture, entemology, geology and the list goes on.

It can be good for children or a waste of time for parents. Some parents do their children's projects for them, other children work on their projects independently all year long, giving them a sense of reward and accomplishment at the end.

I have no clue about the roots of the program. Just waiting for someone to say it was founded by Freemasons!  :heretic:  It's something I would look into before participating.

Thinking back, we said the creed before every meeting and it goes as follows:

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,

my heart to greater loyalty,

my hands to larger service, and

my health to better living,

for my club, my community, my country and my world.

Here's a website that explains it more.

Thanks for the replies.  Sounds like it could be a nice complement to homeschooling.

Oh, yes!! Perfect with homeschooling!  But that was 50 years ago.  I don't know of what changes there might be.  I hope it is all still good as it was.

I have known a number of homeschooling families who have been a part of it.  The only thing to watch out for is camping overnight if they do it co-ed...  Other than that it seems to be a really good thing! :-)
