  • A friend mentioned his preparation for Lent, which is right around the corner.
Here's a list from some traditional Catholic priests, for consideration:

    1. Start with a Humble and Sorrowful Confession.

    2. Holy Mass, daily or as many times as you can make it during the week.

    3. Pray the Holy Rosary with your family. (Increase it to 15 Decades, if possible).

    4. Pray the Stations of the Cross, slowly.

    5. Read from the Bible daily, and with your family, if possible.

    6. Read a good Catholic book or from the Lives of the Saints..

    7. Make time for more, heartfelt prayers.

    8. Disconnect from all social media (except Cathinfo)

    9. Stop watching the news.

    10. Fast and eat healthy, with more family meals.

    11. Forgive and Pray for those who have hurt you.

    12. Increase your prayers and Novenas for the Poor Souls suffering in Purgatory.

Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • I don't plan on having a strict Lent. I plan on fasting and abstaining as was required before the council, but I do not plan on doing any harder penances. I will go to confession every week. And I will try to avoid all sin including venial sin. I would go to Mass every day if I could, but my chapel only has Mass on Sundays.
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • Something that has stuck with me for many years after hearing it from the pulpit was, "Abstain from sin!" I truly believe that this is the first and foremost important thing that one should commit their selves to during this coming season of Lent.

    How about some common ones:

    1. Meat
    2. Sweets, desserts.
    3. Alcohol
    4. Coffee ( I can't drive a car if I do this one).
    5. No snacking or go from 3 to 2 meals per day.

Aren't we supposed to do this every single day anyway?

    Makes no sense.

Yeah, sure, you can do it!

Just ask the "little tough guy" Saint Andre Bessette, to help you!

This idea of "What do you plan to give up for Lent ?" is a Novus Ordo thing. Period.

Of course it makes no sense for a priest to say that for Lent we should  "abstain from sin", it is typical Novus Ordo, where they can't say that you have to fast, so they say "give up something". Since they are appealing to the lowest common denominator Catholics in the Novus Ordo, who rarely if ever go to confession, it does make sense that they would ask people to abstain from sin "as a sacrifice".

What we did before was a Lenten fast. My 1940's ordained priest told us "to have one main meal with meat if you like, and two other smaller meals (no meat) during the day. The smaller meals can't add up to more than the one main meal".  That does not mean we pig out in the one main meal. No meat at any meal on Friday, nor meat in sauces. That fast sounds pretty lame to me. In olden times they really fasted, every day no eggs, no cheese, no meat, one mail a day....

I have one main meal with meat, and no meat on Friday and hold out till 2-5pm to have the meal. I have a glass of orange juice in the morning  and maybe an apple with some cheese in the evening  if I ate the main meal early like say 2 pm. I'm now 63, and have added 2 eggs in the morning if I'm going to do heavy physical work that day.

We were last Sunday by our SSPX priest to "give up something for Lent", unfortunately the SSPX went lame on Lent like 12 years ago.

  • Low Mass before work, Catholic reading only, and as much of a Lenten Fast as I can manage. I go to weekly confession anyhow, so keep that up, I suppose.

  • I'm giving up the internet for Lent. The latest "Eccles is Saved" article convinced me of it (though the article is quite humorous, and I doubt that Eccles will really give up the Pope for Lent).

Hopefully the SSPX won't reconcile before Lent is over, because I won't know about it if it happens. Oh well. My plan is to pray more for our loser-of-a-pope.

    Eccles is saved article:

    http://ecclesandbosco.blogspot.com/2017/02/giving-up-pope-for-lent.html
"It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."

You do realize that the minimum required age for fasting is 21 according to the 1917 Code of Canon Law. Would it be an abominable "novus ordo thing" for those younger than that to give up something for lent?

From your link, the spirit of Lent:

Let us fast with a fast pleasing to the Lord. This is the true fast: the casting off of evil, the bridling of the tongue, the cutting off of anger, the cessation of lusts, evil talking, lies and cursing. The stopping of these is the fast true and acceptable (Monday Vespers of the First Week).
