  • My favorite rosary was lost recently (by a facility). I’m currently searching for a new one. Just for fun, what are your criteria for your personal rosary?

  • For me definitely wooden and unpainted, with proper large beads I can fit my fingers on easily. I don't like plastic or metallic beads, and I dislike it when grabbing at the beads without looking means I accidentally grab two at once and lose my place.

The ones we have at home all look somewhat like this, except the crosses on our ones have a much nicer shape.

  • Since having children my only real criteria is durability. Needs to be able to withstand a tug of war.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • I still have my old black Jerusalem olive wood rosary that I got when I converted. It’s in rough shape but it’s my original, it’s been blessed with both the Roman and Dominican blessings, I’ve touched it to relics of the Canadian Martyrs. So it’s special. I also have one of those “Combat Rosaries” for when that one wears out. Really and truly that thing is TOUGH. There are also paracords Rosaries (I have one too, but it’s way too big to carry around with you).

Please disregard everything I have said; I have tended to speak before fact checking.

  • I use the Benedictine rosary, for extra spiritual firepower one might say, and for my monastic based spirituality. There is a special blessing for it of course.

  • I got mine from blackmonkrosaries. They are made with paracord, and have a variety to choose from. I have had mine for a year, wearing it every day around my neck. I chose it for durability, both for myself and hopefully to be able to hand it down. It’s nice to be able to pray it while driving. They are a bit expensive but in my mind well worth it.

    Gr
    Durability, I agree, is paramount.
I am now making rosaries using the strongest cord available, without being metallic, nonetheless, it's tensile strength and durability rivals steel.
I like oval beads made of magnetite, a naturally occurring mineral, for the Aves, and WAY oversized Pater Noster beads. The effect is astounding, and the Paters keep me AWAKE! HAHAHA
So far I've used very old Pater beads, like 2 or 3 hundred years old. A variety of crucifixes is nice, but the high grade St Benedict crucifix with real wood inlays and real nails is just right, however, it does raise the cost by $25.

  • Great the Paters woke you up, Neil! I was almost at the point of praying for the repose of your soul!

Heaven knows how much I need it right now.

    Woops.
Made a boo-boo ------- not magnetite, but hematite.
5 mm thick, 8 mm long, makes for very comfortable Rosary praying.
    .
(You'll have to find something else to offer up for a sacrifice!)

    .
The wood in these rosaries from Jerusalem is olive tree wood.
    .
It is quite durable, develops a lovely patina over time, feels good to the touch and is harder than oak, more like hickory or maple wood.
    .
The knots used above in the illustration between Aves and Paters are of longstanding tradition.
It's quite soothing to have an obvious change when going from the 10th bead of a decade to the Pater bead.
Then you don't have to stop and think about which prayer you're on, but you go to the prayer quite effortlessly, and you can direct your energy toward the meaning of the prayer, instead of  toward the accounting of how many times it's been repeated.
