Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

I've not heard of anyone giving up hot water.  Does that mean no hot showers and no cooking pasta?

  • How about just following the traditional fasting rules of the Church? When did the idea of "giving something up" come into vogue?

St John Chrysostom has this to say:

    "Do You Fast?
Give me proof of it by your works.
If you see a poor man, take pity on him.
If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him.
Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eves, and the ears, and the feet,
and the hands and all the members of our bodies.
Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice.
Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin.
Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful...
Let the ear fast... by not listening to evil talk and gossip...
Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if
we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers?"

I think people started "giving something up" as a practice of detaching themselves from the world, even if it's only for forty days.

That's an interesting question and could be the subject of a term paper, An Anecdotal History of Lent.  I know that my mother, who was a child in the '30s said they always had to give up any treats during Lent.

  • electronics. (with the exception of computer for strictly homework, email, and the cell phone)

I have the feeling this will be a grueling lent...

By the way, the hot water idea is a clever one; Most of us take hot water for granted, and so it would be quite an inconvenience to do without.

In regards to being a responsible man, would it be interesting to learn, after six years of accuмulating all the wisdom you could, that you had it right all alon
