  • There are many word crimes on CathInfo. I was just thinking to start a thread inviting the listing of them.

    Here goes:

    Anyways instead of anyway.

"Off of" as in "get off of my back" instead of "get off my back".

Crossbro's inability to interpret the meaning of a past perfect verb as Matthew pointed out in the "Dumb Catholic Match" thread.

  • Here is a classic

    Quote
I used to kind of think that it did.

However, upon further reflection, I never heard of a phenomena known as COD, or Circuмcision of Desire.

    So I gotta say no.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • I'm an editor. I love this video.

Sometimes people make mistakes with typos. (My vision is failing and it's getting harder to do things right.) Sometimes we let a colloquial form slip into written speech, especially on the internet.

Sometimes these things are done for effect, or as a personal style (I use some archaic words that raise eyebrows, but I don't care. It's me.)

However, in the war between prescriptivists and descriptivists, I'm with the former.

I'm now going to show this to some colleagues.

  • I can tell you this: Weird Al isn't making *any* of these mistakes up. I've seen  all of these mistakes "in the wild".

  • Just a couple days ago, he put out a video called "FOIL." (My kids showed it to me.) It's goes from wrapping up a sandwich, to tinfoil hats and illuminati talk and lizard people. It's really stupid, but then again, Weird Al is known for stupid.

FINALLY someone packs it all into one video.  Cool.

So now, the world's problems in illiteracy are a done deal!  IT'S OVER!   :confused1:

Let's see how many misplaced or missing apostrophes there are, now.  HAHAHA

One thing's for sure, there seems to be a penchant for some types of people to look for ways of breaking rules just to break rules.  And as an educator you have to be immaculate, because if you place apostrophes correctly all year long, and then one day when you make one mistake and put one where it doesn't belong, you will wake up to find that all your students of this stripe will copy your one mistake like it's a new dogma or whatever.

And when you explain the "contraction" lesson, their eyes will glaze over.  It goes in one ear and out the other.

Readers might take comfort in knowing that Fr. Patrick Perez took a minute to explain from the pulpit that anyone who sends him an e-mail that replaces "you" with "u" can rest assured that he will TRASH the thing and never hear from him about it.  Actually, it probably took about 17 seconds.

Since today is the 17th and everyone born in 1917 is 97 this year.

  • IOW - don't tell Msgr. Perez in an e-mail, "tnk u" -- IYKWIM  HAHAHA

Whether we like it or not, the advent of text messaging from a cell phone is evoking a fundamental change in the way young people spell.  If this continues apace, in one more generation we'll have a new language going on.  Mark my words.

  • Somebody wrote per say twice in the one post.

This candidate is not a pacifist per se, but he is in favor of peaceful solutions when practicable.

I'm also an editor, Brennus. Something that drives me crazy: "Should of," as in, "I should of known better."

"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

That's meant to be "I should HAVE known better" A verb, not a preposition.
