  • Declared dead, 91-year-old woman wakes up 11 hours later in funeral home
    By Ralph Ellis, CNN

updated 3:11 PM EST, Fri November 14, 2014

(CNN) -- Never underestimate the healing power of a good nap.

A 91-year-old woman in Poland was declared dead November 6 and sent to a funeral home, only to wake up 11 hours later in cold storage, CNN's Polish affiliate TVN reported. Now she's home and doing fine.

The doctor went to the home of Janina Kolkiewicz in the town of Ostrow Lubelski on November 6 after her family said she'd stopped breathing, TVN reported.
"I checked the pulse on the forearm artery, carotid artery also," the doctor told TVN. "I listened to the heart, to the breathing. I also examined the pupils. There were no reflexes. Typical symptoms of death."

The doctor signed the death certificate, and Kolkiewicz's family began planning services, according to TVN.

    Then the funeral home called.

Authorities are trying to find out what happened.

"We are investigating whether the doctor exposed the woman to imminent danger of loss of life, as the lady was moved to a funeral home and kept in cold storage," Beata Syk-Jankowska, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in Lublin, told TVN.

  • Good thing they embalm people nowadays, or this is the kind of situation that would lead to -- horror of horrors -- being buried alive!

Sounds like those old medievals weren't so dull after all -- they would wait a while before burying a person. They would pray, etc. and keep a vigil called a "wake".

Wasn't the funeral itself an extension of the wake?

Like in the song, "Finnegan's Wake"?  The man (a drunk) was just in a coma, and the smell of alcohol (after it spilled all over) revived him.

  • Not saying this is what happened to this poor women, but isn't there a prophesy about the end times, that devils will inhabit the bodies of the dead?  Sorry I can't remember in what book I read this, perhaps someone else will recall.
    Please pray for my soul.

Embalming is disgusting. Pumping a bunch of artificial chemicals into a dead body to "preserve" it. It's a violation of the body, which is supposed to be a Temple of the Holy Ghost; and it's an act of Faithlessness, for it says, we (meager humans) need to "preserve" the body because we don't have Faith in the Lord to raise us from the dead despite decomposition, as if Christ needs our assistance in preserving bodies so He can raise us when He returns to judge the living and the dead...

    I agree.

I was only saying that embalming was good in that respect only -- that it would prevent waking up 6 feet under in a sealed coffin...

Other than that, yes, we should leave the body alone, do a wake (to make sure they are dead) and bury them in the ground to decompose. Cement vaults, expensive coffins, etc. are for those who don't believe in the Resurrection of the Body or Life Everlasting.

You know, a small HINT of decay might be a good sign that the person is really dead, before they are buried. Nowadays, we're so antiseptic and sterile that everything has to be bleached and perfumed from start to finish.

I totally agree, my husband passed away 2 years ago yesterday, and my mother passed away 1 year ago exactly today, neither was embalmed, nor will I be.

They were also buried in coffins that were made by a member of CMRI, wooden, plain but beautifully handcrafted.

It is a consoling thought to me if I think of their remains returning to the earth as God intended instead of artificially preserved.  Here in Washington State, embalming is a choice.
    Please pray for my soul.
