  • our 18 yo disabled daughter who has been a Traditional Catholic is being taken away from us by some of our adult children and a local mental health group. Our daughter was the victim of a police raid on our son..while she was disabled at 16 when this happened she was nowhere near the way she is now.  She tried to runaway from home 6 times from1/3/2017 til last week each time being picked up by police and brought to local Behavior Science Unit. She has Toruettes syndrome and has been homeschooled all along as well and done very well.  Some of our adult children do not agree with the fact we are Trads and homeschool.
Axes needed to be ground as to how we hurt her and traumatized her...one such exampled was our son who married a divorced protestant woman. He is leading the charge on this. He asked us if she could be a member of the wedding party as a flower girl in the Methodist church we told him no...he has never forgiven us for this...the woman working with our family from the BSU a lapsed Catholic..telling me I was wrong that I traumatized her by doing that.  My pastor told me she couln not participate. We are open to suggestions as we are told even telling her no to anything is traumatizing her.  We are ready to just say you know what...you raise her. SHe is our youngest ..of 11 chlidren. We are in our 60's. Any suggestions.

Continue to say "no" when you have to, even if it pisses them off.  Fight them as much as possible to prevent them from taking away your kid.  Should they succeed, do what you can to get her back.  If she grows up one day resenting you, you tried.  It's more than what most parents and single moms do.

  • Certainly you know that you did not traumatize her by doing that, we Catholics are raised to know better, and presumably, your son was likely raised to know better than to even ask such a thing - and he knows this regardless that he lost the faith. Traumatize her indeed - baloney!

It's a tragic situation, one that all of us trads, or at least every trad I know has dealt with in some way, and it's only worse because she is 18 years old so the world expects you to simply accept which ever way your "adult" daughter chooses to go. The devil wants that soul so bad and he doesn't care whether he uses smiles or gnashing teeth against you to get it.

That sure seems like the best way out, but is it? Maybe for you, but only you can guess if it will even matter at all to your daughter. Will letting her go help her come back to the faith, or can it only help her in her quest to completely lose it?

I can only suggest that you keep trying to do what is right as you have been - certainly God knows you've held up your end of the bargain to raise her in the faith and all the tribulations involved in doing that, but if it comes to a point where you can no longer control your child, then at 18 years old, you can no longer control your child. Sometimes holding out hope that she will come back to her senses does more harm than good - other times, when they regain their senses, it ends up being worth the battle.

If I could suggest anything, I suggest that you remain steadfast and remain uncompromising and do what you need to do to save your own souls, this is what God expects of you. There actually are times when you need to simply let go for the good of your own soul and that of your other children. I don't say that this is that time, that's your call and as tragic a thing as it is, sometimes that's the best thing that you can do - and you do it for the good of your own soul and the souls under your care.

It's a terrible situation, I will pray to Our Lady of the Smile for your family. Get a statue of this Lady and put it in your house, the sooner the better. I cannot say enough good about her, I will only say she has done wonders for us and other trads that I know, all *were* in similar situations as yours. The key word there is "were".

  • You have my prayers, Robin.

I am convinced, due to other circuмstances of others I know, that if one is going to stay Catholic the World and those that love it will persecute you.

Stay strong! Fr. Gruner used to say "God will ask us not if we were successfull, but rather, did we try our best?" Don't give up now. I don't  think you have come this far just to come this far!

    So sad...

I am reminded of a quote of Padre Pio that I repeat to myself:

    "Pray, hope, and don't worry."

The devil will try everything he can to pull the faithful away from the tradition...  Be strong and have courage.  Continue to fight the good fight and never budge in your resolve to do all for the greater honor and glory of God.

    Please keep us posted!

I will be praying for you both and your daughter...

  • Hmm... What would I do in such a situation ?  :scratchchin:

    1. For your daughter's runaway behavior: I'd get my husband and trad relatives and friends to start a 54 Day Holy Rosary Novena for her.

    2. For the Toruettes syndrome: I'd enlist the help of a herbalist and approach treatment that way.

    3. For your very misguided son and others who attack you:  Pray for them too, but don't give an inch. You've done a good job. But, this is part of your test. Hold fast.

"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • I am sorry you are going through such a difficult time. Pray a Novena to St. Jude Thaddeus for this intention. He is the patron saint of causes most despaired of. I cannot say enough about the efficacy of his powerful intercession.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • I pray God will help you in this horrible situation. It isn't surprising though, Christians of all flavors, especially trad Catholics will be more and more persecuted in all ways in the coming years. Liberals and atheists will set their sights on us with diabolic glee.

  • I would investigate having a Traditional priest do an exorcism. I have long believed that most mental illnesses have a distinct spiritual component and there may be a chance she could have some kind of relief from her afflictions with an exorcism.

It sounds like the woman from the BSU (?) is accusing you of causing the Tourette's syndrome by telling your daughter she shouldn't participate in false worship (which is objectively a true statement).

Maybe it would help to collect some statements from experts in Tourette's that conflict with this strange accusation.  Any traditional Catholics who are psychologists or medical doctors might be a source for references for you.

Perhaps if we all ask our friends about this someone might have an idea for you. It sounds really creepy.  I have some friends who have relatives that married Lutherans and other Protestants, and they have all had stories of how the Protestant spouse has relentlessly steered the Catholic into doing things like this against Catholic family members.  So it's not unusual, unfortunately.

Ironically, it is the son marrying the "divorced Protestant woman" who is worthy of severe criticism, as he is committing adultery every day by living with a woman who is married to someone else (divorce is not valid).  Nuts.

  • Today is the Feast Day of St. Andrew Corsini, whose story seems to be not terribly alien to your problem. Perhaps you might find the prayers below helpful!

    St. Andrew Corsini,
    Bishop and Confessor
by Rev. Peter Richard Kenrick, 1840

St. Andrew Corsini affords us, in his life, an example from which we may learn how efficacious is the intercession of the Queen of Saints, in withdrawing the sinner from the error of his way, and exciting him to aspire to, and attain, a high degree of perfection. Before the birth of Andrew, he was offered to the Blessed Virgin, by his holy parents as the first fruits of their marriage. On the night in which he was bom, his mother, Peregrina, had a dream which filled her with alarm. It seemed to her, as if she had brought forth a wolf, who, fleeing to a church, was changed into a lamb. This was a picture of what was afterwards to happen to Andrew. His pious parents employed every care and precaution, to bring him up in the fear of God; but, as too often happens, through the influence of bad company, an immoderate desire of play, and neglect of duty, he fell into the greatest disorders. Dissipation hurried him from one vice to another; until he was without affection for his parents, whom he disobeyed without remorse; so that all who knew him were full of apprehension for the future.

Meanwhile, his mother, mindful of her dream, sought consolation from Mary by continual prayer. Andrew, while one day preparing for a party of pleasure, expressed himself in a very disrespectful manner to his mother; she burst into tears, and told him the depth of her affliction. "Indeed, son," said she, "you are the wolf that I saw in my dream." Somewhat moved at these words, he said: "What do you say, mother? Am I a wolf?" Peregrina hereupon related the dream that she had had, and also mentioned that, before his birth, she had offered him to the Blessed Virgin. So great was the impression this made on Andrew, that he was unable to sleep during the following night. The thought, that he had been dedicated to the Mother of God occupied his mind. "Virgin Mother," he at length exclaimed, "because I am thy servant, I will unceasingly serve thee."

At the break of day, he went to the church of the Carmelites, and prostrating himself before an image of Mary, offered himself up to this merciful Mother, and bade her change this wolf into a lamb. He frequently repeated this prayer; at length it was heard. To serve the holy Virgin in a perfect manner, he asked the prior of the convent to admit him into the order. Having obtained this request, he showed, by the piety of his life, that the dream of his mother was not an idle fancy. Andrew made great advances in virtue, and was soon an experienced master in perfection. He was subsequently ordained priest, in obedience to the orders of his superior, and soon after was made bishop. In all the circuмstances of his life, he cherished a fervent devotion to Mary, his powerful protectress; and sought all opportunities of proclaiming her praises. He was called to the nuptials of the heavenly Lamb in 1373, and experienced, in his last hours, the powerful intercession of her, who had procured for him the grace of conversion, and inspired him with the desire for perfection.

    Prayer:

O, Queen of heaven and of earth! God has loved and honoured thee above all creatures: and now thou art exalted above all saints in the kingdom of heaven. All admire thy virtue and perfection; all praise, and reverence thee as their Queen. O, glorious Queen! despise not my petitions: accept of my homage, my veneration, and my love. I commend myself to thy powerful protection, and dedicate to thee what I am, and what I have. On thee do I found my hope, for although thou art my Queen, thou art also my gracious, and amiable Mother. Thou has quitted this world, and entered into possession of thy kingdom. Thy elevation has increased thy compassion for the hapless children of Adam. From the sublime throne on which thou art seated, cast thy merciful eyes on the inhabitants of earth, and take pity on them. Thou seest to what dangers they are exposed, as long as they sail on this tempestuous sea, on which so many have been wrecked. Obtain for me perseverance in the grace of God, that on quitting this world I may chant thy praises and benefits, and, in union with thee, give endless praise and glory to our common Creator. Amen.

    Practice

Resolve to think often of heaven, and make use of every opportunity of impressing yourself with a high idea of its happiness. When you see beautiful objects, think with a holy servant of God, how much more beautiful is God! When you taste any thing that pleases you, think, how much delight is found in the enjoyment of heaven. When you hear fine music, think of the choirs of angels.

Aspiration: O Mary who can refuse to love thee!

     ______________________________

    St. Andrew Corsini
    from the Roman Breviary

Andrew, born at Florence, of the noble family of the Corsini, was a child born in answer to his parents' prayers, and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. For what manner of man he was to be was shown by a divine sign before he was born: for his pregnant mother dreamed she had given birth to a wolf, which ran to the Carmelite church, and was immediately changed into a lamb at the porch of that temple.

In youth, though educated piously and as befitting his rank, he gradually fell into vice, and was often rebuked by his mother. But when he learned that he had been dedicated by his parents' vow to the Virgin Mother of God, he was set on fire by divine love, and hearing of his mother's dream, entered the Order of the Carmelites; in which he was often molested by the devil with various temptations, but nothing could make him change his resolution of entering religion. He was shortly after sent to Paris and after completing the curriculum of studies and taking his degree, he returned to his own country, and was made superior of his order in Tuscany.

About that time the church of Fiesole lost its shepherd, and chose Andrew for its bishop; he thought himself unworthy of the office and for a long time hid himself until found outside the city, where he was betrayed by the voice of a child speaking miraculously, and, fearing to resist the will of God, he accepted the bishopric. When exalted to that dignity, he applied himself more than ever to the practice of humility, which he had always cultivated; and to the zeal of a shepherd he united tender compassion for the poor, almsgiving, constant prayer, watchings, and other practices of virtue, and he was also noted for the gift of prophecy so that his sanctity was proclaimed by all.

Prayer to the Queen of Carmel

O glorious Virgin Mary! Queen of Carmel, Mother of God and of poor sinners; special Protectress of all those who wear thy holy Scapular, I supplicate thee, by the glory that has been accorded thee by the Incarnate Word in choosing thee for His Mother, to obtain for me the pardon of my sins, amendment of my life, salvation of my soul, consolation in my pains, and in particular the grace I now ask, provided it be conformable to the will of thy divine Son. Amen

O Queen, who art the beauty of Carmel, pray for us.

     (Indulgence: 300 days)

All ye holy men and women who by thy virtues have given glory to Carmel, *

Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world:
     Spare us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world:
     Graciously hear us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world:
     Have mercy on us.

     V. Pray for us, all ye Saints of Carmel:
     R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

     Let us pray:

Almighty and merciful God, Who dost rejoice us by the memory of all the Saints of the Carmelite Order: grant that, inspired by their example and merits, we may live for Thee alone in the continual observance of Thy law and in the perfect abnegation of self, and that we may attain to perfect happiness with them in heaven. Through Christ Our Lord. R. Amen
