  • Ok so I’m back been busy. Were half done building an addition to our off grid home on a private lake in the bush. So we want to make a room for a nanny to help out. Have 6 kids at home, homeschool,we grow a good size garden, own a few milking goats. Payment would be free room n board. Travel with family for free and eat n stay at hotels for free. Mass is 1 per month but could be more if need be. It’s all negotiable but a great experience for someone who would like to travel to Canada. Obviously you must be a trad Catholic likes kids n farm n animals  and camping. Not ready yet, but we do have a guest cabin until addition is finished. Contact me if interested jkaa12345@xplornet.ca.

P.s I think more homeschooling families should ask our Catholic community for help more often, I see it all the time.

  • I know of older marms who have been displaced by being widowed or divorced who are aimless souls abandoned by their families but faithful Catholics. I think there should be a network in the church to help these ladies serve other families. That would be your ideal candidate.

  •  Payment would be free room n board.
I'm pretty sure this is illegal under the Canadian minimum wage laws.  For example, in Ontario, the minimum wage is $14.00 per hour.  Assuming a 40 hour work week, that's $560 per week.
The most an employer can "credit" an employee for free room and board is $85.25 per week.  Which means you'd still have to pay the nanny at least $474.75 per week.  More if the nanny works more than 40 hours a week.
Obviously, this will fluctuate a little bit if you're in a different province, but there is no way it is legal to only pay a full-time worker with free room and board.

The homeschooling families I knew did help each other, those with older kids bartered babysitting or manual labor for tutoring or skills in auto mechanics, carpentry, roofing. We have to help each other.

That's how some of the stories in the news have run recently- nannies and maids, (usually from a 3rd world country) on call 24/7 and not paid, receiving "room and board"... hmmm... what did they call that in the Old South? Oh, yeah...
(Not at all implying that copticruiser is the kind of person who would do such a thing, just noting that many naive immigrants have been in very bad situations.)

  • Impossible to be illegal to open your home and have a friend or relative live with you and help out around the house or farm. There is a site called woofers been around for many years what they do is:

All workers work on Organic Farms For Room and Board
the purpose is to learn to travel to meet people all ages welcome.
Duration can be a week or a year whatever your preference

As far as it being common for homeschoolers of large catholic familes to be there for each other. Well that only works in areas where there is a higher population of catholics. Where I live there is only 1 other family the rest are 3hrs away so pretty hard to have a catholic community other than your own family.

I agree there are Widows, Seniors, Unemployed catholics who would love to just get out there and try something new.  My neighbor charges $1000 per week to live out where we do, no vehicle or food included only a cabin (european clients). Now if I serve organic moose, potatoes, carrots, beets, goats milk, goats meat, eggs, pork, hams. Hmm I guess my nanny might just owe me money at the end of the week. LOL!

Isnt it great to live in a free country!!!!!

As a man, I wonder how the "nanny" mindset works? It sounds naïve to me. My wife would never allow a young girl to live in our house. I could understand if the nanny was an elderly lady, however, what elderly lady would like to live in the cold wilderness and eat wild game and such?

We have had literally hundreds of complete strangers come to stay in our home over the years, especially when we were homeschooling, though never a nanny.

Not everyone thinks the same. We were far from naive, and we had wonderful experiences. Though most people were amazed that we would do it.

It seems to me the coptic cruiser is offering hospitality, while hoping to benefit by widening the family's horizons.

I hope you have success, coptic cruiser in finding just the right person.

  • Who would like to live here? Well I've never had a heating bill in 20yrs. Almost free wilderness wood every winter. I open my windows mid winter. Spring is coming and I live in a less harsh part of Canada but yes I do own a few vehicles, we have buses, planes, even cellphones and internet in the area. I travel only on Hwy no gravel roads to my place. Land of a 1000 lakes very clean water and fishing. If you don't like moose meat I'm surrounded by cattle ranchers. Lo laws is 30 min drive. Private yet everything accessible.

Now a young woman in my house from a mans view? Well if the sspx district superior thought it would be a good idea, who am I ?
Besides we're practicing Catholics who value virtue and have young children of our own.
My Italian Arab genetics would clue in pretty quick my husband rather not provoke not worth the risk. Lol

  • Well this nanny idea is new and a consideration with everything negotiable. Spring is here in 2 months so the cold won’t be an issue until end October. Were really spontaneous laid back sort of family with only general structures very opposite to a Hutterite colony. It’s just nice to kick back and enjoy I’m just finding it would be great to have some alleviation from time to time to maintain the self sufficiency of farmlife. I look around and see it would be so easy for a few families to live here. There is a place in France I want to research a group called the beatitudes they do Catholic community living. It’s appealing but I realize it would have its challenges. Shall let you know in 6 months what ends up happening.
