  • Viva Texas!

Over 22 acres of land for only $176,000 (total)!

The average home in the US used to be $282,000, with no land. Imagine that!

Way cheaper than the land I bought...the location is very good, however. Only 25 minutes from 2 different decent-sized cities, and less than 30 min. from San Antonio.

Very rural and peaceful in the immediate area, however. Very beautiful.

If anyone buys this, please PM me so we can meet! hahaha

  • I live nearby in Conroe.
What is great about the State of Texas, there is no
    state income tax.
It leaves a few extra dollars in our paychecks every
    week.

  • A bunch of us should go in together, move to TX, and then bug the snot out of Matthew and his gang morning, noon, and night!!!  22 acres is plenty of room for a small army...

That's right. In Illinois (where I'm from), we had to pay 3% of our income to the state government.  If you make $50,000 a year, that's $1,500 -- just to the state! Nevermind property taxes, interest, federal taxes, medicare, social security, FICA...

Save money where you can, that's what I say.

Another nice thing about Texas -- no permit required to own certain pieces of equipment.  :good-shot:  :cowboy:

And you're allowed to  :good-shot: if someone comes on your property, and you think they intend to do you some harm. You don't have to retreat once first, etc. If people take a few classes and get a license, they can CARRY THE THINGS AROUND, not just own them. Hooray for Texas and common sense!

Half the cost of mobile home living is lot rent.

That's why you stay away from the "parks". We just got a new neighbor this week -- well, I don't think they're actually there yet. Last week it was a vacant piece of land (maybe an acre), this week there's a house there. I think it rivals our home in square footage. We're still one of the few in our neighborhood living on a concrete foundation. : )

Of course, there's some hassel in having it moved in and having the electric and plumbing set up. Finding one that's already in place is probably a better idea. The point is just to buy (or finance) the land outright so you don't have to worry about endlessly paying lot rent.

    Great.

Now I'm going to have to come up with $176K to stop this insanity!

That would be nice!  :faint: Sadly, new ones are pretty expensive. They can get up over $100,000, and even the used ones on the market get very close to it. Then to pay for getting it set up and so forth... it'd be a tall order on an anorexic budget.

Of course, then there's the atrocious fact that nobody will ever get out of paying rent, because we will all at least be paying rent to uncle sam under the threat of loosing our homes, for all of our lives, no matter how rich or poor, young or old, able-bodied or disabled we may be. Bottom line is, it's not really a question of IF you pay rent, but really only TO WHOM you pay it. Since there is no such thing as private property anymore, paying rent to a landlord doesn't seem nearly as bad as it probably ought to. Thanks to unjust taxes, we're all just tenants.

  • $100,000 for a trailer? That is the height of insanity. That almost reminds me of the funeral industry coffin scam where they charge you $5,000 for a $100 wooden box. My friend recently bought a brand new 1800 square foot condo with granite counter tops for $120,000 in Greensboro, NC.

  • We drive 40 minutes west to get to San Antonio's SSPX chapel. They have Indult "Extraordinary Form" in San Antonio too, which seems to be moving up all the time. I think they have their own church now.

And I heard rumors that the FSSP is talking with the diocese about getting a permanent location/church to set up shop here.

But I must say, the SSPX isn't doing a very good job taking care of San Antonians. San Antonio is a HUGE city, and objectively speaking the capital of Catholicism in Texas! Historically, this is where evangelization of Texas began. We should have a priory (main SSPX location where 3 or more priests stay during the week) here, not a small, cramped location that the school across the street wants to pull eminent domain on...

Don't get me started. There are a bunch of parishioners here (including myself) currently trying to get the "authorities" to let us buy a bigger building. We have people watching Mass on a TV set in the parish hall every other week, because everyone won't fit in the chapel! You can imagine the abuses that would take place among the people attending Mass in that manner. One lady was seen eating a breakfast taco. People come in late, because who's going to see them over there in the hall?
But worst of all, we have new people showing up ALL THE TIME and they seldom show up the next week. Probably because there's no room for them in the actual church!

And get this -- we have the money. We have a nice savings account right now. One parishioner has pledged a good sum as well.

But 1/3 of our parishioners -- mostly the "early Mass" crowd are the ones who don't like change, even moving to a larger church to accommodate the needs of the Catholics around San Antonio. These are the people who go to Mass at 7:30 AM, and leave immediately after, not saying a word to anyone. Sick!

I know what I'm talking about, too. My wife and I used to spearhead a shopping card program whereby we sold gift cards to the local grocery store HEB (you'd have to be in Texas to understand, but HEB is where most people buy groceries around here. There is little to no grocery store competition around here) Every $100 in gift cards, the church made $4. Easy money, considering people have to buy groceries anyhow!
Several times we'd arrive early enough to sell the gift cards to the people leaving the early Mass. We saw several people who didn't even make eye contact with anyone, smile, or anything. Even if you're shy you can be charitable and/or polite. A smile doesn't cost you anything.

Catholics aren't supposed to be anti-social. With Catholics like that, it's no surprise that people aren't converting.

And I realize that old people don't like change -- heck, I'm still using Windows XP and I'm only in my 30's. I'm getting quite adverse to change myself. But it's something we have to offer up for the spiritual good of Catholics around us. Can't people give up ANYTHING or inconvenience themselves in ANY way for the sake of souls?

Oh, and there aren't many sedevacantist chapels around here, as far as I know.

  • My condolences, Matthew.  That's what I am used to from the NO.  Perhaps a group of you could get together and "be different" and start a new movement.  To share a few ideas with you, we have coffee and doughnuts in the basement after each Mass. Once a month the nuns put on a breakfast; free will donations.  The basement gets pretty noisy and crowded, though, and some gather in the entry and visit or out on the steps.  Some of us gather under the tree by the office---that's my favorite place.  I will pray for you on this.

  • My husband would go in a heartbeat. I, on the other hand, would die. TX is way too hot for me. If he went back it would be minus a wife!  :laugh1: So we are trying to find land further north.
