  • Every Friday early evening I see Orthodox Jєωs walking to their ѕуηαgσgυє service instead of driving. They walk because they are forbidden to do any work on the Sabbath. What has always puzzled me is why they consider driving a car work. It is more work to walk the distance to the ѕуηαgσgυє. I heard somewhere once that the Orthodox Jєωs even tear the toilet paper from the roll the day before so that they don't do that on the Sabbath since even tearing piece of toilet paper off the roll is considered work to them (don't know 100% if that is true or not, though). Anyway, it just defies logic how they think that these activities are considered work.

They are trapped in the insanities that result when the traditions of God are made void by the traditions of men.

  • I'll give you a better example of insanity --

The Muslims (not sure what "flavor"), during Ramadan, keep an odd sort of fast -- they eat or drink nothing until sundown -- then it's party time! They actually go through MORE food during the month of Ramadan than any other month.

    Here's the insanity:

They won't even swallow their spit! A priest I knew who was stationed in the MidEast said that you could see all the university students spitting over the wall -- heaven forbid they should swallow their spit and break their fast!

  • What about the total lack of logic of some Muslim women wearing head scarves in public for the sake of modesty (because Islam considers it immodest for a woman to expose her hair) yet at the same time they are wearing pants and even tight jeans.

Sounds like me after Lent when I've given up chocolate for 40 days - as soon as it hits midnight on Easter Sunday, I charge for the choclate and pig out on it for the next couple of weeks until my taste buds calm down a bit.

Oh?  And we most certainly are not?

I have always thought that lots of these things are silly--though I had never heard about the toilet paper thing--however, keep in mind that sometimes it's not "the rules" that count, but that sometimes submitting to these rules is a way of showing our submission to <other>--both God and neighbor.  This obedience, whether or not God Himself truly demands it in a specific way, is the key to humbling oneself, and keeping oneself separate from the world and its desires.

Yes, I'm slowly learning this... :smirk:

  • I'm not acquainted with the quaint laws of Orthodox Jєωry and most of their religious foibles.  They may not be able to tear off sections of toilet paper on the Sabbath, but they appear to have no problem persecuting Christians every day of the week.  See

    Sounds contradicting, huh???

I wonder if persecuting isn't forbidden on Sabbath.

I may have misspoken here.  But I don't think they are prevented on the Sabbath from discussing among themselves an agenda for the following week's program of persecution, or from reflecting upon the previous week's persecution activities.  One of the reasons I referred bloggers to the link above was to rid any naive person(s) of the notion that the only thing which ultraorthodox Jєωs do publicly is to bob their heads up and down in front of the Wailing Wall, or amble along the thoroughfares with heads down and hands folded behind their backs.

Considering these missionaries are Protestant I don't have too much sympathy - the Protestant missionaries are like a cancer spreading into all the countries, even Catholic-only countries and leading away thousands of Catholics from the faith.

I do know that these Jєωs also persecute the minority Catholics in Israel.

Looking at it from the point of view of the Jєωs, however, I do understand why they are doing it. They are trying to protect their fellow Jєωs from being joining what they think is a false religion. Afterall, didn't the Church in Catholic countries try to prevent heretics from publicly preaching to the Catholics and that is why there was the Inquisition? These Jєωs are demonically inspired but, like Saul before his conversion, they do not realize it and think they are defending God.

Perhaps so, Magdalene.  But I think that often, in the general perception of many outsiders, the Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox Jєωs are viewed as a basically benign, harmless and persecuted minority, whose members would not hurt a fly.  I think we can safely dismiss any such notion out of hand, don't you?
