it appears the new Vatican press is attempting to rehabilitate Roncalli's past before his pending canonization. I suppose this will give many nominal Catholics reason to be dismissive of criticism of "blessed" John XXIII becoming a "saint". This whole business stinks, V-II was a Masonic revolution in the Church, Roncalli was it's Robespierre and JPII was it's Napoleon.

Italian journalist and theologian Gianni Gennari on the unhidden friendship between Angelo Roncalli and Italy’s most famous “heretic” modernist, Ernesto Buonaiuti

Right at the start they put the word HERETIC, which Buonaiuti surely was, in quotes. Hey no big deal...what's a little modernist heresy between friends ... Right?

The title “Roncalli insegnò con le dispense del modernista Buonaiuti”-  which roughly translates as “Roncalli used modersnit Buonaiuti’s notes in his teachings” - published in Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on 28 August 2013, may have shocked some readers. In actual fact, Marco Pizzi’s story about the future Pope (Roncalli) using material from his friend (Buonaiuti), whose theology gave off a vague whiff of heresy, is no news. People have known about their friendship for decades. What they don’t perhaps know is that Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was and always has been passionate about history and taught History of the Church as a young priest. In Rome, Roncalli was a friend and study companion of Ernesto Buonaiuti, a famous theologian (he is Italy’s most famous modernist) who was criticised for his modernist approach. For about a decade, being a modernist meant you were doomed, with many simply accused of being ahead of the times. Buonaiuti’s modernist approach got him expelled from ecclesiastical teaching, excommunicated and after the Lateran Concordat of 1929, he lost his chair at the University of Rome, under the Mussolini regime. All the hostility Buonaiuti received led him to steer many elements of his theological thought away from the fundamental truths of Catholic doctrine, Christ’s true divinity and the very nature of the Church as a mystery, as the Lord had wanted it to be.

 
the implication being what was once a heresy no longer is. As Ratzinger put it, we've simply moved where out truth is anchored and now we know better. But how many souls will believe this? What if Buonaiuti was a different type of heretic, an Arian or Pelagian, would they simply write that off as nothing?
They're dismissing the idea that being modernist is a problem.

 

Buonaiuti and Roncalli attended the St. Apollinare Pontifical Roman Seminary for Legal Studies - which for centuries educated the cream of the Church’s illustrious figures – together, as visiting students. The young Pius XII and Paul VI passed through the doors of this institute. Then, in the 70’s, the Holy See suddenly decided to close it down and the events surrounding this decision have been the subject of many controversial news stories.
 
 
Although over the years some of Buonaiuti’s doctrinal positions really went beyond the boundaries of the Christian and Catholic faith, the question that needs to be asked is how far the hostility shown by certain influential figures at the time pushed him to radicalise some of his theories regarding Christ’s divinity and the true nature of the Scriptures as a source of Christian faith and the Church itself.
 
 
Roncalli and Buonaiuti were friends and study companions and neither of them ever denied this. During a visit to the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary, in the southern Italian municipality of Roccantica, in September 1960, Roncalli recalled how when he went to celebrate his second mass after being ordained priest, in Roccantica, he was accompanied by “poor Ernesto” who was acting as assistant priest. At the time, novice priests had to be accompanied by a more experienced priest, who acted as “assistant”. So Pope Roncalli was friends with one of the most famous modernist “heretics” of the first half of the 20th century.
 
 
It is true that when Roncalli went to teach History of the Church in Bergamo (northern Italy), he used some of Buonaiuti’s lecture notes as a reference. But anyone who has read this material will confirm that the notes contained no doctrinal error and when news got out about Roncalli requesting these notes, it was already too late to use it to stop his ascent to the Throne of Peter on 28 October 1958.
 
In his article for Corriere della Sera, Marco Rizzi said that every detail of Roncalli and Buonaiuti’s relationship  was scrutinised in order to eliminate any speck of a doubt about Roncalli’s orthodoxy being potentially tainted…” The following story, told to me by well informed sources, could ( though I do reserve some doubt), be treated as confirmation of this:  Shortly after he was elected Pope, Roncalli asked for the former Holy Office to be checked for any files addressed to him. Someone did indeed find a postcard Buonaiuti had written to Roncalli, who was abroad at the time, and then obviously discarded as it had been ripped into four pieces and thrown in the bin. Some spy from some house, delegation, nunciature or whether they were from, decided to stick the postcard back together and send it to Rome, as if to prove Roncalli was linked to the so-called “heretic” and thereby sully his reputation. Which just goes to show poison pen letter writers are ever present.

OK all of you Pelagian Restorationists just move along, there's nothing to see here. Don't you dare besmirch the reputation of our revolutionary leader. :barf:

There's simply no way that St. Pius X and Roncalli/John XXIII can both be saints IMHO
