  • I wonder if maybe it's not really the letter "L" that's being misspelled, but rather a strangely shaped "J?" In looking at the other words on the medal, such as "Illi," the letter "L" is shaped differently from what appears to be the "L" in Jesus.

"It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."

    ~St. Robert Bellarmine
    De Romano Pontifice, Lib.II, c.29

Oh dear, my joke fell flat.  It was a play on the same mistake made by the Vatican.

  • To be fair, it was the State Mint's fault, to the Vatican's.

  • I wish I had a few of those medals, they're now valuable collector's items.

Also, though, it's good imagery for this current papacy.  Just as the very word "Jesus" is misspelled so slightly, but not completely, so too is the Church having it's own "misspelling."  And so, too, do we see something "a little off" about Pope Francis.

The imagery is great for our current time, and I think the medallion is appropriate.
