I'll cut Pell a bit of slack, though. I take him to be a youngster and it is very true that the debased, insane culture he's struggling through really has done nothing to steer anyone at all in any direction but madness.
I think we should come up with a suggested theological and arts and sciences recommended reading list for the poor guy.
I'll start by recommending he read:
A: The Acts of the Apostles ( to become grounded in the formation of the Church )
B: "A Summa of the Summa" ( Kreeft / Ignatius Press* ) - to start out with a basic guide to systematic thought.
C: "The Hunt for Red October" by Tom Clancy - all the adventure and heroism a young man could hope to find in a great sea story. Another great classic is "The Good Sheperd" by C F Forester. I'm sure his local library has copies of both.
