  • Do you all think maybe our forum is being watched?  All of you know what a BOT is right?  This person is MSN Bot!
Guess it may be  my suspicious mind working overtime.  Maybe this person will surface!

  • CathInfo is a discussion forum, but it is also a website that can be indexed, or cataloged, by the search engines.

Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and the other search engines send out "bots" or "spiders" to crawl the Web for content to add to their massive databases. That way, when someone searches for "traditional Catholic fight" CathInfo will come up near #1 in the search results

If your website is really important, they will send those spiders out on a daily basis. Smaller sites might see them once a week, or once or twice a month.

Google has to constantly keep up with what new content is out there, since content is being added/changed constantly.

For a long time now, the CathInfo forum software has been able to distinguish between these automated spidering bots, and regular guest users. That is why the bots show up under their proper name, "Googlebot", "MSNbot" etc.

  • The three that are on here continuously are:

    Googlebot
    MSNBot
    Yahoo! Slurp

I've watched them watching us.  They also are checking user profiles (once the both of them [Googlebot and Yahoo! Slurp] were checking me out at the same time).

I've also seen them copying threads.

Google and Yahoo are here all day - MSN not as often as they are.

I also would like to know how Guests can use the messenger and post.  And why some registered users sometimes are identified as "Moderating."

  • Maybe they want to convert but can't decide if they want to be SV Catholics, SSPX Catholics, NO Catholics, Indult Catholics, StayatHome Catholics or ABC Catholics.

  • You ladies make me laugh with threads like this.

If you click on Active Users, it will show you the latest activity for each person active in the past (15) minutes. (might be 10 or 20 minutes, I don't recall)

The "bots" don't know the difference between a page of content like a thread and someone's profile which usually doesn't say much or change often. So, they have to scan the whole site. I'd imagine it will often show them using the messenger as well as that is a page on this site and the "bot" doesn't know the difference.

As for members "moderating". I think the site uses this term when someone is editing a post which is a moderating feature for a moderator. The same label is used when you're editing your own post.

  • If you don't like being watched, you shouldn't really use the Internet at all.  :tv-disturbed:

The only reason you have to believe that you're NOT being watched is that there are just too many people using the Internet and not enough humans "watching" to notice it all.

Those two aren't really the same thing. I did grow up with a computer and am as literate as I need to be, but I don't like being watched either.

I could post more, for example, but don't like the permanence of what I say being here forever for anyone to see.
