  • 1) Does anyone know any good websites defending the Vulgate?

    2) Does anyone know how to send an email to the guy who runs the "Roman Catholic Imperialist" website?

  • Why do you think Church teaching needs some guy with a computer and a website to defend the Vulgate. I'd go to original Church teaching. Anyway, it's not really up to you to figure it out. The Church has spoken. That should be enough for you. (And me).

What is the website you ask about. How about a linky?

My word! Can't a man ask a simple question. Do you have some sort of a complex, reacting like that.

I read the Vulgate. I know the main arguments in favor of it but don't have a lot of materials on it in my library. I wanted to find some things to print out. When I look on-line all I see is stuff attacking it and things about "KJV Only."  I am especially interested in anything the Dead Sea scrolls may have to add to our understanding of it.

Has anyone anything helpful to say?
As for Imperialist. On second thought, I think I'll drop that question. He is a little too weird. I'll find him myself.

  • Brennus, I cannot answer your questions, but if you are looking to convert a Protestant I would recommend showing him how unreasonable the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura is. A good book to help you in this endeavor is 21 Reasons to Reject Sola Scriptura by Joel Peters.
"The Blessed Eucharist means nothing to a man who thinks other people can get along without It. The Blessed Eucharist means nothing to a communicant who thinks he needs It but someone else does not. The Blessed Eucharist means nothing to a communicant who offers others any charity ahead of this Charity of the Bread of Life." -Fr. Leonard Feeney, Bread of Life

  • Is the Vulgate under attack?
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Thank you. Actually, I'm pretty good at debunking sola scriptura.

I was thinking of defending the Vulgate from Novus Ordinarians.  :light-saber:

Can't a man answer a simple question with a simple question? What is this complex thing you refer to? Are you a follower of Freud?

Do you read Latin fluently, or just enough to pick your way through?

I would suggest a pamphlet entitled, "Which Bible Should You Read?" formerly published by TAN Books (currently out of print).

A PDF of the booklet is available online.

    Briefly:

    1. St. Jerome who translated the Vulgate was a linguistic genius having learned Latin and Greek VERY early and added other ancient/Biblical languages when he was a bit older. He is unmatched in this regard.

    2. St. Jerome had access to more manuscripts that are no longer in existence. He could compare several manuscripts, to get the best sense of each passage. So his Vulgate translation goes back further and is more accurate than most modern-day Greek or Hebrew translations.

    3. The Catholic Church has pushed the Vulgate since the very beginning. She knows what She's doing.

Discipulus Freud non sum et vere credo in auctoritate Bibliae Sacrae Vulgatae, quam Hieronymi nostri sancti interpretatus est. Miror inurbanitatis tuae (excusa me, quaeso, cuм deficit vocabularia mea.)

Something from TAN! Perfect, Matthew. That sounds like what I am looking for.

I know about 1 and 2.  No. 2 is of great interest to me. As for No.3, I doubt it not.

Few things boil my blood like the ubiquity of the New American Version in all the Novus Ordo churches and chapels.

Ah. Me aestimaris trogdolutus, quis eos in foris interretialibus sollicitat, esse, anon?

Ratiocinatio tua haec: Brennus petit defensores Vulgatae, ergo Brennus Trogdolytus est.

Absolutely not. I've never accused you of being a troll, nor have I thought you were one.  You asked a question and I just gave you some advice I have found helpful. I've never found much to rely on in the "foris interretialibus".

Oh. All right. We're friends then. I'm sorry for being so hot headed. I don't like the internet much. This is only the third forum I have ever posted on.
I agree with your idea that we don't justify church teaching to ourselves, rather we accept it – which I've seen now, looking back into some of your other posts. I completely agree with that. Very much so.
I think you understand that that is not what I was getting at.

By the way. I made up using "trogdolyte" for troll on the fly. I've never had to translate troll into Latin before. It seemed apt.
