  • I am in Australia. The UK, the old homeland, and Australia are still intrinsically linked. A lot of the wealth that The Brits pillaged out of their empire was inverted into Australia and still is. Over the last ten years I have observed the government owned Australian Broadcasting Commission [ABC] become the chief News source in the country. This has come about via government funding whereas the independent broadcasters have less to spend. There is a current attempt to bring in laws which control somewhat the media. This is done in the name of making the media responsible for their behaviour i.e. in the wake of the English phone hacking scandal.
What has happened in Australia has occurred in parallel in the UK. Must have common masters!
Both the BBC and the ABC have a reputation for being anti religious.
Now for religious content on TV.
We have all observed how an actor dies and there is a string of their movies during that period.
I was surprised during the recent conclave when no TV station in Australia ran a movie that had a conclave in it. There are some which give a good insight such as “The Shoes Of The Fisherman”. Even “Angels And Demons” has a conclave as a sub theme.
I write this on Good Friday and am browsing thru the TV program for today. This is part of what I see.
Two of the three independent consortiums i.e. various channels each, have a religious movie ie Barabbas  and The Miracle Of Our Lady of Fatima.
And what of the ABC, the government broadcaster…. 9.30pm….  wait for it! ….. The Godfather……my godfather!

  • Toss the TV out the window. Free yourself from the insanity.

  • Mater has a very uncompromising attitude against TV.
    So have I.

Get rid of TV, and save your soul.
Do NOT give it away or sell it. If you do, you will be morally responsible for the sins caused by other people using it.

The best thing to do is to break the TV, so that no one else can sin by using it.

Take it into your yard or garden. Wrap it in an old cloth or blanket. Then drop a brick through the screen.
Then get rid of the evil thing.

Do not risk eternal Hellfire because you will not give up the sin of TV.

Yes. Or get a sledgehammer and smash it into pieces.

TV isn't called "satan's box" for nothing. It's best not to own one.

  • I know everyone seems to hate television, but, the Internet, in my mind is the bigger evil. I have limited television and all the garbage isbblocked by my password. Kids cannot watch anything I don't approve of, when they are allowed to watch at all. An Internet filter is an absolute must.

Good can come out of the internet, though. CatholicInfo being an example.

Can any good really come out of owning a television? Some would say it could if you used it just to watch Catholic DVDs. Alright, sure, but most of those Catholic movies can be watched on YouTube anyway.

  • I dunno, a computer seems a lot more dangerous than a TV to me.  If a baseball bat should be taken to a TV screen, a grenade should be taken to a computer.

ETA: I see this has already been mentioned.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • In fact, tonight, after our evening rosary, we are going to watch the classic "King of Kings". A good way to end today. At church together all afternoon as a family. Two of my boys serving. Life is good.

Who wants to huddle around a 10 inch screen to watch a movie?  Especially if it's a family with kids.

  • I read somewhere that 99 percent of Internet users watch porn at some point. TV, with parental control, can be harmless. I barely watch three hours a week. Usually a movie and a period of hockey. Yes us Canadians can't function without a little hockey. Lol

  • I think the important thing is to have the family altar be the centre of our living room. The TV, admittedly 50 inches, is in a side room.

  • If anyone is at a loss for what to do tonite, there is a devotion in the church that has been practised for a couple hundred years.  It is called the "HOUR OF DESOLATION" of our Blessed Mother.  It carries a plenary indulgence when you make your Easter Communion.
Spend an hour or 1/2 hour in prayer or meditation on Our Sorrowful Mother anytime from 3 PM on Good Friday until 6PM Holy Saturday.
After Mary buried her son was her most desolate time.
It can be found in an old Raccolta and also the Behold Thy Mother prayerbook.
"Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]
