Providing a single Eleison Comments or other letter of his would be perfect.

Giving your opinion or personal understanding of his position is not what I'm asking for in this particular case.

Thanks.

Well I will have to look it up on youtube in the conferences he gave in Kentucky.

He said academic college should be for very bookish and intellectual young men.

He supported technical education or a trade, over 4 year degrees, for most young men.

I don't think anyone is arguing men should never go to college.

It's whether or not college is a serious threat to the Faith and morals of young people, more serious than other things.

I don't think that's what you said in those other threads. You were quoting Bishop Williamson as if his views were in contradiction with what I was saying.

What you describe (above) sounds more like how I got my own ideas! I'd say that his views sound like my own views rephrased, but I know that it's the other way around :)

You yourself were reasoning effectively that college was no different than exposure to the general population.

So how could that possibly be the same as Bishop Williamson's position?

  • Matthew,

One of the bishop's letters from the seminary covers all of this. We have it, but it's buried under a ton of papers.

    Quote
Q: How many percent - speaking generally - do you blame the man, how many percent the woman for today's problems of the family?

Fr. D: 90% the man, 10% the woman. Man was created by God the head of Creation, its leader; woman was created man's help-mate and companion. When Eve fell, and led, Adam was doomed; but only when Adam fell was mankind doomed. His refusing to lead, his being led by her, wounded all creation. Nothing is rectified until man leads, hence Christ, the New Adam, who goes before us, leading us, in carrying the Cross, which is the remedy of the failure to lead. When men refuse to lead, then women become unhinged. Then the part they play in the disaster increases.

    Interesting perspective.

  • Matthew, Bp.W. is opposed to university/college for women, almost entirely.  He has told me, in person, that I am a "very rare exception" having been given a special grace not to have been corrupted by it.  As for men, only a few should go.  My reference is the Conference in Brewster, NY in April of this year.  I don't know if it is on-line.  In my case, Bp. W. told me this in May of 2005.  Hope that helps.  Why not write to him yourself?
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • Before I entered the seminary in Winona in the 90s, Bishop Williamson told me to finish up my last year of college first and get my degree, which I did.

  • If someone says about the university "oh, it didn't hurt me." - it's like someone saying that you shouldn't worry about the plague because he survived it.

If you're college educated and are aligned with the SSPX resistance, believe in traditional Catholic family life, you're the great exception.

The way Catholics raised their children over the past 50 years has been an absolute disaster.  Catholics cannot follow the example of their parents in these matters and expect to have a Catholic posterity.

And what did Catholics do that led to catastrophe?

They listened to liberals who had infiltrated their leadership and were trying to lead them astray.  And they sent their sons and daughters to so-called "Catholic schools" controlled by those anti-Christian liberals.

If someone on a board like this suggests there aren't grave dangers in secular co-education and that it need not be avoided when feasible, well, that is clearly not in line with Catholic teaching.

  • You are so right, Tele

My older daughter had her life threatened out at university. Her girlfriend, with whom she shared  an apartment, turned lesbian. Her lesbian friends threatened my daughter, so that she had to leave in the middle of the night.

I agree with Bishop Williamson. It's no place for your daughter. Maybe not even  right for your son if it causes him to lose his faith.

Good points.  May I ask where you were educated (specific institutional name not required).

  • I commuted to the local state school.  Even when I was there tuition increased dramatically, but it was relatively cheap back then.
