    Mariawald Trappist Abbey Closed Down -- Summorum Undone by Current Vatican Regime

    "The Trappist Monastery of Mariawald, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, was one of the very few monastic houses in the world to make use of the provision present in Article 3 of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificuм that allowed for the whole conversion of such a house to the exclusive use of the Traditional Rite.

    We covered this momentous news in 2008 (see our 2012 post), and in 2015 we published the translation of a great interview granted by the abbot responsible for this change, Dom Josef Vollberg.

    The traditional turn at Mariawald was too much for the current vindictive regime installed in Rome, and they forced the abbot out in 2016, as we also covered at the time.

    Now, the inevitable outcome arrived: as GloriaTV reports, the old abbey is being closed and completely dismantled. What two world wars could not destroy, Bergoglianism could:

    The old-rite Trappist abbey of Mariawald, Germany, will be closed down. The Vatican, the Trappist order, and the Diocese of Aachen on whose territory the abbey is located, have announced this in Mariawald.


    The monastery was inhabited by the Trappists since 1909. All employees lose their jobs. The monks will be transferred to other monasteries.


    During this year, the monastery and all its possessions will be handed over to Aachen diocese. The monastery and church of Mariawald will probably remain closed forever.


    In a letter dated November 21, 2008, Benedict XVI granted the abbey the privilege to return to the old usages of the Trappist Order in liturgy and monastic life. This concerned especially a return to the venerable Old Rite. The pope saw this project as a "renewal of the church in the spirit of tradition". Now this renewal is over before it could get off the ground.

    It is true that while the Church will survive all obstacles, religious houses, cathedrals, abbeys have been closed and destroyed many times before. Yet, we are confident in the hope that, just as abbeys ravaged by savagery, in the Reformation and in the post-conciliar storm, did not last forever, the current regime in the Vatican will not last forever either."

    • I don't like hearing news like this.  I will take traditional benedictines like this or traditional FFI over luxury loving double tonged traditionalist clergy any day.  But, the former seems to be on the rise, and as you report, that latter on the decline.

    In police interrogation tactics, both the good cop and the bad cop are actors, as both are working towards the same goal with different tactics. Bergolio in this case is the bad cop. An example of a good cop (for now) is Athanasius Schnieder. They are all actors working towards the same goal with different roles to play, depending on the scene.

    Apparently this isn't clear.  What I believe is going on here is that Ratzinger is being made out to be the good cop in order to keep people in the Novus Ordo sect, to keep people hoodwinked.  I think this is the real reason behind his resignation.

    • Yeah, it's a Hegelian dialectic type of game.

    Thanks to Bergoglio, even conservative Novus Ordo types look back on JP2 and B16 as veritable St. Pius Xs (because they almost are when compared to Bergoglio).  So this perception of that dividing line between conservative/traditional and modernist has shifted well to the left ... all by design.

    • Well, I’m reality, isn’t this really a good thing? Another sign of what the apostate conciliar Church truly is. Driving out tradition. Let this stand as another mark on why you can’t trust Rome, why they must resisted. Let this news reach the ears of Bishop Fellay - let him hear about ANOTHER group being taken down. Let Bergoglio and Rome continue to show themselves as they are, and let all true Catholics bunker down in the catacombs, because that’s where we’re headed.

    Merry Christmas to you as well. My point was merely that the Trappists have always been a small monastic order because of the stringent lifestyle, not that it hasn't suffered a decline since the Council. If people seeking a religious vocation don't find the Trappist life appealing and choose another order or the diocesan priesthood, I don't think we are in a position to judge them as being somehow soft.

    This bit of news is a pleasant way to round out a rather overall dreadful year, setbacks for the SSPX, the Election results, various catastrophes, people's individual struggles... We hope and pray (which is all we can do overall) 2013 will be much brighter despite the different Govt mandates doing into effect for the new year.

    I think it's very interesting that while Summorum Pontificuм seems to be a dead letter in Rome, it's proving to be an anchor for the Church at large and allow folks to implement it as best they can. 

    God bless these Trappists for taking a stand with action, not just words.

    Bergolio / John XXIII / Paul VI / JPII / Ratzinger - Same dung, different packaging.


    The Vatican II church made John XXIII and JPII saints, next will be Paul VI, and as soon as Ratzinger dies he'll be a saint soon thereafter.
