My first rifle was a 336 chambered in 35 Rem.  I wish I still had it.

223 is too light for bear or deer.  It is almost too light for humans.  If the round hits at 2,700+ fps, it will usually tumble and yaw.  Under 2,700, it is basically a 22.  I read an autopsy report where a thug was shot 16-20 times with an M4.  Around 15 rounds passed clean through without much effect.

From a humane standpoint, I would defer to a 30 caliber to hunt.

Nothing wrong with hunting from a moral standpoint, as long as it is done with proper intent.

That's why deer (or black bear) should not be attempted beyond 150 yards with a .223, and ideally, not beyond 115 yards. If you're using a varmint rifle with a bull barrel and/or "22 to "24 barrel, then the velocity with be maintained to 150 yards. The 150 yard mark is when the velocity drops to 2700 fps and below...

Tumble and yaw of a bullet to interior flesh is devastating.

I agree with you guys.

It was an expirement with safety measures. Everything worked out.

I will be back to my Benelli R1 chambered in 30-06 with a Leupold vx-2 scope.
