  • God bless you on this Sunday Afternoon:

Prayers to all of the CathInfo members impacted by hurricane harvey.

Can any of you recommend a very basic reading list for traditional Catholics (especially Catholics who have recently escaped the Novus Ordo)?

This is what I have come up with so far:

    - 1962 Roman Missal (I have also been told the 1958 Missal if I can find a copy)
    - The Baltimore Catechism # 3 by Fr. Connell (But do you recommend all four books in the series? For some reason I recall hearing that this was the only version that I needed).
    - The Sources of Catholic Dogma by Denzinger

Also, since I will need to prepare the children for First Holy Communion, is there a book that anyone can recommend for small children?

    Thank you! God Bless

You as well. This a more of a request to all others; Please note well the "new" part.

Gently. As this possibly will turn into another debate about relative merits of various works, one more "dude" with no cents of his own is going to help.

Feel free to touch base if this doesn't work out for you otherwise mcollier

  • Baltimore catechism #1 for the children.

The Sinner's Guide for adults. It's available through iBooks if you have an apple product and may also be in archive.org. Lots of good old Catholic books are on archive.org. Look for ones by St. Francis de Sales, Thomas A Kempis, Lorenzo Scupoli, St Ignatius, St Teresa of Avila,Thomas Aquinas and of course a copy of the Douay-Rheims Bible. All are available in digital format, some through iBooks, some from archive.org

Also do a search for Catholic audio books. There are dozens of great ones sprinkled around the net.

  • For a recent escapee I'd suggest to learn the  Traditional Mass by purchasing "The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass"
We used it in school over 60 years ago and the SSPX uses it in their schools today.
It's available from Lapanto Press at Our Lady of Victory

    http://olvs.org/ShopCart/InvDtl.aspx?InvId=10314&GrdId=&InvCatId=

Click on "preview this book" under the book.  It's the same work format as a catechism.

  • Books about the lives of the saints and books by saints. There are very many of the latter.  which make excellent reading.

Prayers for you and your wife. Ask her if she'd like to join us at CathInfo. She can ask any questions she might have. And also there is a women's only section, sadly not as often used as before but still very friendly and family centred.

  • Newman press has books, small with silhouettes called Catholic Boys and Girls.  Expensive but very nice stories.  Also "My Catholic Faith", by Morrow for everyone! Then for adults, City of God.

Since reclaiming the Traditional Faith is about much more than just the Liturgy, I would suggest all the encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII, Pius XI, and selective encyclicals of Pius IX to begin with.
Concerning present issues such as marriage Casti Connubii by Pope Pius XI is excellent, a complete catechisis on the sacrament of Holy Matrimony.
Also I found it helpful to read the docuements of Trent concerning the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.
You can find most of that online for free.
Another book I found really useful is The Mystical Body of Christ in the Modern World by Rev. Denis Fahey. It's excellent and worth the effort.

Are you a convert from Protestantism? This feels like Sola Scriptura.

  • absolutely not i was born and raised a pure Godly Catholic, i would never be a filthy sin ridden protestant
Catholics also sin. No one but Our Lord and His Mother are incapable of sinning.

The Holy Bible is great, but there is so much more to the Catholic faith other than the Holy Bible.  If what you say is true, it invalidates all the written words of the saints and doctors of the Church.  Priest spend years in the seminary studying the compilations of works.  These are meant to build and enrich faith as well as to provide an understanding your faith.  The Catholic Church has never taught or inferred that to be a "Godly Catholic" you should only read the Bible.
