Traditional Baptism RITE only - No Baptism

  • Some of my children were baptized in the NO. I don't doubt it's validity but I do recognize they didn't receive the traditional exorcism since the new rite is lacking it.

Anyone know if a traditional Priest can do the ceremony (minus the Baptism) to where the person receives the traditional blessings and exorcism but just not the Baptism. I know it's been done to someone I know in the NO who's child was baptised in an emergency and later on they had the ceremony part (the annointings etc.) in the Church with people present.

Any knowledge out there whether or not it's useful to have this done or if anyone else has had this concern? Wouldn't baptism (and the indwelling of the Trinity) automatically force the devil out (since we're all born children of wrath)? If so, why the exorcism in the first place?

  • Exorcisms-priests only and above from my understanding.....

  • Folks,

    This is very interesting indeed!

Do you know how many Catholics have been baptised using the NO ritual?

I am one of those, I just wonder if Confirmation "corrects" whatever was missing from the Baptism Ritual.

    Anybody knows?

  • Who cares how many are NO baptized???? what does it matter or change?

I was baptized in early June 1971, unsure if it was trad baptism or NO....I was confirmed just shy of my 18th B-day in 1989....

Never heard confirmation corrects baptism-maybe, maybe not, not sure and unclear as the confirmation may be by a NO priest as was ones baptism....

Valid priest? valid water? valid trinitarian formula? shuold be good to go, God providing for any defects not of the fault of child or parents......

    It was a rhetorical question.

  • Just for the record I'm not doubting validity. I'm just wondering if it's beneficial to pursue the exorcisms that are omitted at a NO ritual.

I'm wondering if it would be necessary at all since the exorcism, if I understand correctly, happens BEFORE the baptism then the soul is filled with sanctifying Grace and the presence of the Blessed Trinity. It would seem to me that the presence of the Blessed Trinity would exclude the presence of the diabolical.

...but if that's the case then what is the purpose of the exorcism in the first place?
