  • Has anyone visited any of them?  I pass through TX at least once a year and I hope to visit several that are accessible from I-10.  But it is a little confusing because depending on which site I look at they have anywhere between 8 and 13, and one writer said there were 20 but did not list them.

They are all now used by the NO, but I would like to see their interiors anyway.

  • I have heard  of them but barely.

Do you think the novus ordo being prevalent  means Satan more or less owns the Church?

  • Yes, I know at least one: Church of the Immaculate Conception, Queen of the Painted Churches (AKA St. Mary's). It's in Schulenberg, Texas, 78956. If you only ever see one, see this one! My great-grandfather assisted in building it. He is also known to have said "The only organ that sounds nice is in St. Mary's."

I refuse to post my pictures of it, as it might spoil your delight... and they aren't that good anyways... But, Oh! How beautiful is the church! Even the best of pictures shall never do it justice!

When are you passing through? I shall try to provide directions when the opportunity presents itself. And yes, it is accessible from I-10, but it will take maybe 45 minutes to reach it.

Ah, forget that part... my mind slipped. If you come directly off I-10 it'll probably only take 15 minutes.

Then again, you could just google the way there?

  • I've decided to compile a list of Catholic sights in the US, I suspect they are all in the hands of the NO now, but I would still like to see places where Christ was once held to be King.

I've started with TX only because I travel through there on I-10 every year.  I would like to have destinations for each state eventually.

(Matthew, if you see this would it possible to have a permanent Catholic Destinations Board under the General Discussions board like the one for Buy-Sell-Trade?)

  • Not all the 'painted churches' are Catholic. The Catholic missions are older. The San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio is the oldest church in Texas. It was built with donations from expat Canary Islanders, both my grandfathers were born there. If you head east where I-10 ends and go down 95 a ways, you can visit the oldest Catholic parish in the US, in St. Augustine, it's ground zero for all the missions that headed west.

Other places to consider, National Shrines http://www.gcatholic.org/churches/data/shrineUS.htm San Antonio is home to the Minor Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower.

We need to reclaim our heritage. Place a blessed miraculous medal in the doorframe of the churches you visit.

  • Just north of Conception, Missouri (NE of St. Joseph and SE of Maryville) in Clyde is the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. They are caretakers of over 500 relics of saints. Spent two hours there one glorious day greeting my spiritual ancestors.

Be prepared if you enter the adoration chapel, your knees will buckle and the fountain of your eyes will break forth, not to mention you will not be able to talk, or breath.
