  • Have you ever crossed paths with someone who made you think about how God might present himself to man in an unassuming way?  When I was working today as I approached my vehicle an old man riding a bike circa 1950's, stops on the sidewalk near my car and asked for my help.  As I got near to him he looked like he was in his 80's, small built, skin on bones, wwII ballcap on, with typical old man polyester blue pants on.  He ask for help with a servere lisp and pointed to his shoe.  The black lace had wound its way around the peddle so he was kind of stuck to his bike.  I gently unwound the lace and tied his shoe and he peddled off.  It just struck me how a man who has lived his whole life could need my help like he was little kid again.  It made me fell human again and not just a means of production.  Anybody got any feel good stories?

  • Yes, I feel that way sometimes when I cross paths with someone who is suffering like the elder gentlemen you are talking about.  It's like feeling the presence of Our Lord in a way.  I can't remember what saint it was who, when told to bring the Church's treasures to the Roman Emperor, instead of bringing gold and earthly treasures, brought the poor and sick before the Emperor's servant and told him "Here are the treasures of the Church".  This saint was promptly martyred.  You can sense in the suffering the graces of their cross that has been given to them.  I believe I would feel the same if crossing paths with Saint Benedict Joseph Labre, my patron saint....

  • My family and I were heading into the mountains one summer day. Needless to say we were bounded with energy and a 'damn-it's-good-to-be-us' 'tude. Stopped at an intersection, we see a man who had to be in his sixties, in rags, begging. We offered some of the snacks, a towel, bottled water and maybe some money. When he approached our car, he could hardly walk. The light changed. We waited. We gave him his things with a frenzied alacrity and drove on. Quietly.

I think of this and almost weep.

  • Of all the drug addicts, homeless, and panhandlers I have met in my life (and there have been many since California is riddled with them), I still remember this one homeless man that I came across almost 20 years ago. He was sitting outside of a record store that I was about enter. I forgot if he was asking for money or not but I ended up striking up a conversation with him. He was an alcoholic who has lost his family and job because of his addiction and had ended up homeless. When he was telling his story, he began to cry and my heart melted. He had black sores all over his body because liver disease from the alcoholism had taken over his body (I believe he was going to die soon). When he was crying, he reached out his hand to hold mine and, despite my fear of touching his hands with his black sores, I held his hand. I still think about him to this day.
