This is the first sɛҳuąƖ abuse case to hit Colombia. Bishop Cordoba has made an appeal

A Colombian court has condemned the local Church for paying 240 thousand dollars in compensation to the parents of two minors who fell prey to sɛҳuąƖ abuse by a priest: this is the first case of its kind in this deeply Catholic country.


Individual priests have been condemned before by the Colombian justice system for acts of paedophilia, but never the Church as an institution. The sentence was pronounced by the court of Ibaqué (Department of Tolima) against the diocese of Libano-Honda, headed by 65 year old Father Luis Enrique Duque Valencia, who was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment for having abused two children, aged 7 and 9, back in 2007.

 
The two minors come from families that were driven from their homes following the Colombian conflict. The priest has offered to take them in, given their difficult situation.
