  • ... but I still don't know what to think.  On the one hand no one can decide wether it was regicide (bad) or tyranicide (not bad) that Guy Fawkes and his coconspirators were guilty of.

On another hand, the British government knew about it a long time in advance and let it get as far as it did to make the Catholics look like a threat, and use this excuse to persecute Catholics.

The government only knew because Fawkes and his co conspirators warned some members of parliament.

Fawkes and his coconspirators (he was a convert) were desperate and frustrated after years of empty promises from the king and parliament that anti Catholic legislation would be removed.

The Gunpowder plot seems to be a response to decades of oppression, but a fellow monarchist sees it as terrorism.

He's not Catholic, and I don't expect that to be the reason for his view on this issue.

So you're still with the Guy Fawkes issue, for I still see you have not changed your avatar for awhile. In fact, it is not much different from the last avatar you had on FE, if I am correct? lol Anyway, well about the issue of the Gunpowder Plot: What would have happened to the English monarchy if Guy Fawkes was successful? Would the heirs be actually Catholic? Would there an overthrow of the government for a time? What of Parliament? Of course, it would all be speculation on our part if we wanted to try to answer these questions, but what happened happened. It was probably attempted regicide because James I was indeed the legitimate monarch over England. It was just sad though that he was not a Catholic. If it were not for the Scots chasing out his mother the Queen Mary from Scotland, he would have been most likely raised Catholic, but tragically he ended up being brought up in Protestantism. His son and two grandsons who took the throne later on had some more Catholic leanings. Well, Charles I may have had some, but I do not think he was too much for Rome. I know Charles II converted on his deathbed, and James II was the last Catholic monarch of England. Would Charles I, Charles II, and James II have each taken the throne then if Guy Fawkes was successful in his plot? Who knows? All Catholics could really do sadly under persecution in England at the time was either go into hiding or leave the country to go somewhere else in order to practice the Catholic religion freely.

  • The issue came up, I didn't start the debate.

Actually, I keep the avatar as a half joke.  Radtrad symbol if you will.

Hmm, but what makes a regime a tyranny?  Is there a list of standards as to what a tyrant is?  How many of the requirements on such a list would James have?

  • Hugh Ross Williamson wrote a book called The Gunpowder Plot.  Have you heard of it, or read it?  I imagine it goes into the truth of the matter (or what can be known).  I have read another book of his, and he seems to be a reliable source.  I believe The Gunpowder Plot is available from Neumann Press (Minnesota).

  • Yes, you already sent me the link at the monarchy forum.  Or was that someone else?

It was probably someone else, they're an SSPX supporter.
