We are planning a trip to east TX in the spring to visit family and will be passing through the prairie/lakes area of TX. I see a listing of the "painted" churches but I'm wondering if some are more worth the time than others.
Has anyone toured them? Or done the Texas Independence Trail?

Watch out for "Elevationist" and International Church of Cannabis. (Cannabis is the Latin name for marijuana.)

No, the painted churches in TX were originally constructed by the Czech and German immigrants late 19th, early 20th century. The pictures I have seen are beautiful. Although they are NO now they have been maintained/restored to their early beauty.

I once read where St. Philomena's chapel, that St. Damian of Molokai restored was painted in bright colors.
Damien’s ministry, understandably, had quite an effect on his flock. As more converts were made, the pews of the small wooden structure overflowed and by 1876, the "west wing" or "transept" was added to Saint Philomena to accommodate the growing congregation. Damien is also said to have painted the interior and exterior in a variety of bright colors to suit Hawaiian tastes.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse, New York who came to work on Molokai not long before the Saint's death reported that the chapel paint job made it look like a "Chinese shop", which had surprised them.
No doubt, St. Damian had identified closely with the suffering souls on the island of Molokai.
While bringing them the Faith and the Sacraments, he also constructed their caskets and helped bury almost 2,000 of them during his time there.

I think the most popular ones to see are nearest to Schulenburg. There are two "St. Mary's" in High Hill and Praha that would be good places to start.

These remind me of the colorful interiors in some of the old California Missions. Much of their original colors have been lost due to age and corrosion but some chapels have carefully restored the wall painting patterns and colors.
