  • Just read an article titled: Economics: The American Church Matures in Christ

In it, I found this passage, here:

    http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/otc.cfm?id=1038

    Quote
Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, argued that the bishops necessarily overstep their “competence” when issuing specific policy judgments. Surely this indicates a deepening perception of, and commitment to, what bishops are created by God to do.

But first prize clearly goes to Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence:

I am just not sure in this very difficult time that we as bishops need another docuмent that won’t be relevant. I don’t think we can afford to erode our relevance any more. If we want to give hope to our people…we should scrap the docuмent, go home and provide tangible support to those in need.

Some bishops are older and have been around for a very long time. But there is growing evidence that the younger men are the more mature Christians. This last quote, against the background of the ecclesiastical atmosphere of the past generation or so, is spiritually stunning. It represents a Church that is ever young and ever impatient with all words that are disconnected from the Word.

So, do y'all think it is apparent that the previous Baby-Boomer generation of Catholic clergy is a washed up collection of irrelevant fuddy-duddies?

I mean just read it--"another docuмent that won't be relevant."

    It's like there's no more grown-ups.

Before some audiences not even the possession of the exactest knowledge will make it easy for what we say to produce conviction. For argument based on knowledge implies instruction, and there are people whom one cannot instruct.  - Aristotle

  • It's quite shocking to me to see a bishop that isn't in complete denial. I have to ask a question about one part of this passage though.

I wonder what kind of "young men" the author is talking about. Is he talking about the charismatic hipsters, with their horn-rimmed glasses and their absolute love of science, that just wants you to feel that Jesus man, feel God's love.

Or is he talking about the respectable traditionalist, who fears God, wants to serve his Lord by making babies or being ordained into his holy priesthood, and passes onto others what he himself has received?

You are too kind, my friend.  Pernicious, world-loving tools of Satan is how I would describe them.

"The American Church" - that says it all.

I just don't have the stomach any longer for N.O. news/information, vascillating between anger and gut-wrenching grief, and now replicated with any news from menzingen and +Fellay.

  • Dr. Jeff Mirrus is not worth reading.

I should know, I just spent the last half hour perusing his nonsensical pandering.

  • Most Baby Boomies were in their early childhood to early teens in 1960. The original degradations started happening within the WWII generation ahead of them, not that the BB's tried to stop it. Most of them decided to leave the Church completely, not deform the system from within.

I haven't seen that much of a groundswell among the x, y, zers to change anything, or bring the NewChurch back to dry land.

The idea of the profligacy of the "American Church" is just plain silly. Sillybecks, Ratzinger, Wotyla--are all Europeans.

And what would that evidence be?

There have always been a lack of grownups. Different day, same situation.
