  • What is the correct grammatical response to "How is your family doing?

    They are well.

    They are good.

Or does it depend on whether you are talking about their health or moral standing?

What if you simply want to give a correct polite general response without making any distinctions?
"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world." Saint Thomas Aquinas the greatest Doctor of the Church

  • In a formal setting make merely making polite conversation with someone who really doesn't care about my family, I would simply respond, "They are doing well."  In such cases, I rarely ask about the questioner's family in return since I know he or she doesn't care and is simply trying to be polite in an awkward way.

If it is a more informal setting, I would reply something like, "They're fine," or "Everything is ok," etc.

That seems like a perfect answer.  Thank you!

When I grew up people used to say.

    "How do you do?"

    And the response was

    "Fine, thank you."
