Title: The Exorcism of Emily Rose. True story?
Post by: Jacafamala on January 14, 2010, 03:54:13 PM
I thought it was a real exorcism. In the other thread, I posted this question:

How does an atheist explain what happened to Emily Rose?

REALLY SCARY!!!THE REAL EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZfg57LZ34g&feature=related)

CM says no, it was all too much Hollywood. He linked this, from Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anneliese_Michel). Which claims the "possession" was all just the delusions of a mentally ill girl.

Well, perhaps. I don't know if that's correct or not. Anyone can write anything in Wiki and then it gets edited and reedited. The Wiki article could be true, but it could also just be someone's opinion. I guess really the reason it matters to me is because I see the existence of demonic possession, horrible as it is, as being proof of the Holy Catholic Church. So, if it was a true case, people should know about it. If you've ever read anything by an exorcist priest, it gives testimony to the truth.

Does anyone know if the trial really ended the way they said it did in the movie?

So, was it the real deal or not? Does anyone know?

Wasn't Emily Rose(aka Anneliese Michel) one of us (a Traditional Catholic)  as well? I have heard that she was.

This leads me to raise another question, can a solid devout Catholic in the state of grace be possessed? The exorcists that I have seen comment on this say that it is impossible.

I think she was, anyway Unity Publishing has this (http://www.unitypublishing.com/Apparitions/EmilyRose.htm) to say.

Anneliese Michel was born in Leiblfing, Bavaria, Germany on September 21, 1952, and was raised in the small Bavarian town of Klingenberg am Main, where her father operated a saw-mill. Her parents were devout Catholics and she grew into a deeply religious person. She did much penance in response to the post-Vatican II changes that the Church implemented.

Yes, I've heard that too, but I've also heard sometimes, but it's very unusual? If someone were to put a curse on a devout Catholic, I believe it is possible. At least this is what Fr. Fortea has to say in the book, Interview With An Exorcist. Remeber, satan can possess the body, but the soul isn't his until after death, unless someone has truly given themselves over completely.

We know that many saints were bothered by the devil, St. Padre Pio, St. John Vianney, many others.

Fr. Fortea also said that someone in a state of grace can be possessed through no fault of their own, if they are to become a victim soul. That would be Emily Rose. Blessed Alexandrina de Balazar I believe was possessed for a time, in reparation for souls. She suffered very much. But, I can't find anything online about the possession. Still I have a book about her life  somewhere (put out by TAN), so I'll double check it if I can put my finger on it...(where is it?)

I believe it was real.  Forget the movie - the audio (parts of which are in the youtube clip above) sounds too real.  Also note how similar it is to the film the Exorcist - if you are thinking that the girl might have been mimicking that, she was showing clear signs of possession in the same year (but before) the movie came out.  The Exorcist is also based on a true life exorcism of a young American boy many years earlier.

You are definitely right about Satan possessing the body - he can never touch the soul while you are alive.  Now, it is also worth noting that it is not possible to "sell your soul" to the devil - the devil will never own your soul - but if you go to hell, he can certainly torment it.

Jacafamala, forgive me, my intent was not to state I disbelieve the possession, but that the name of the girl was not Emily Rose, but Annelise Michelle.  I believe that she was possessed as well, but that the spin Hollywood put on the story was malarkey.

I didn't read the Wikipedia article, rather I just linked to the first Google hit that had the correct name.  The Dimonds actually have an audio on her that is worth listening to.

Sorry for the confusion.

Demon possession?  Definitely real!  Special effects in the movie?  Ultra-cool and Super-scary!  Premise of the story?  Total faith destoyer.  My advice:  avoid like the plauge and watch "Boys Town" instead!

Oh, one other thing that has to be said about that movie:  if you've ever wanted to see a world where everyone traded in their black and grey clothes for browns, tans, creams and olives, you'll luv this film!

Actually you can. People do it all the time.

Selling your soul to the devil is knowingly and willingly giving him the rights and dominion over your soul in exchange for something.

If being in a state of mortal sin is (in a sense) possession of the soul, then how much more so is it for a person who formally gives themselves to the devil?

If your soul is in such a state then the devil does indeed "own" you until you make a sincere confession.
